Drive-thru windows at fast-food restaurants, banks and other businesses have long represented the convenience for which American businesses are renowned. But the ease of idling in a vehicle while waiting for your order is now associated with another development: climate change.
As a result, some communities across the U.S. are banning drive-thrus, citing the additional carbon emissions that are released. Minneapolis this summer banned construction of new drive-thrus, while officials in Long Beach, California, have imposed a six-month ban on new drive-thrus while they study the issue. Similar ordinances restricting or prohibiting fast-food windows have also been adopted in communities including Creve Coeur, Missouri; Fair Haven, New Jersey; and Orchard Park, New York.
Minneapolis cited air pollution from idling vehicles as a major factor for the ban on drive-thrus, along with litter, noise and the potential of vehicles blocking sidewalks, which can increase the risk of a pedestrian accident. The order is part of the city's long-term plan, called Minneapolis 2040, which includes a goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050.
Orchard Park, New York, a town of roughly 30,000 people just south of Buffalo, last month banned new drive-thrus in one part of town, citing traffic concerns. That reportedly prompted threats of a lawsuit by a local businessman who was interested in building a Tim Horton's restaurant in the area.
Some cities also want to change how drive-thrus are used. Portland, Oregon, last year began requiring businesses with drive-thru windows to serve customers who arrive on foot or bicycle if other entrances are closed or inaccessible.

I Pray that someone will point out to the Dem candidate, on the record, that they should advocate for Banning all Motorsports, amature and professional, because its unnecessary and the engines dont meet emmission standards. Also all recreational Boating and aircraft.
And also Ban all Fireworks Displays bucause they are a filthy mess and burn toxic chemicals, and is unnecessary....
That hasn’t dawned on the Climate nuts yet.
When it’s a -40 windchill in Minneapolis and you have just come from the doctor with a sick toddler and are trying to pick up a prescription, thank the politicians you will have to park your car at the only spot available in the back of the lot, drag your sick kid out of the car and walk into the pharmacy all to save the planet from the hoax of man caused global warming. I hope there is a special place in hell where Al Gore and Greta Thunberg can enjoy their well deserved warming.
Drive-thru is an advantage for the business, not the consumer. The business controls how many napkins/condiments you get and moves people through quicker. If your order is wrong, you get to go park, and wait in line inside to try to get it fixed. That’s if you check right away, if not, too bad for you.
I always go inside to order so I can check my order on the spot and get as many napkins and condiments as I want. I usually eat inside so I can refill my water cup too.
Somebody’s gonna be mad if they have to get out of their car to get their chicken nuggets.

Not surprised. Marin County did this years ago. I don’t have a problem with it....drive thrus are usually slower then walking up to the counter anyway.
The downside is that now the lazy and the snooty folks will have to mingle with the hoi polio in order to get their In-n-Out fix.

What counter staff? My recent experience is that they have reduced the counter staff to only one person who is often not there and there is a floor staff person who tries to intercept you to force you to use an electronic kiosk rather than approach the counter. They really don’t want you to place an order with a person and wait for it to be filled.
I’ll bet today’s cars with computer controlled fuel injection and exhaust gas monitoring don’t produce any more pollution per amount of fuel burned than when they’re travelling down the road.
If that’s the case, an idling engine is putting out far less pollution than when it’s propelling the car.
The fast food places probably put out more pollution from their grills than the cars in the drive throughs.
Do away with charging smart phones, tablets, computers ,etc.
What about electric vehicles at drive-thrus.
What about handicapped people, it sure makes it easier to go through the drive through window
