A man facing eviction from his Northwest Side condo building went on a deadly rampage over the weekend, killing four people in a neighboring apartment as they sat down for dinner before hunting down another neighbor and shooting her in the back of the head as she fled, Cook County prosecutors alleged Monday.
Police later found two chilling notes written in Polish in Krysztof Marek’s apartment in the Dunning neighborhood.
“Tomorrow!! No Mercy
Without any stupid hesitation!!!” prosecutors said one read in part.
After prosecutors laid out the dramatic details Monday in the Leighton Criminal Court Building, Judge John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr. ordered Marek, 66, held without bail on five counts of first-degree murder.
“What I just heard is evil on steroids,” the judge said.
Tsvetanka Kostadinova and her husband, Ivaylo Popov, both 43, were seated in Apartment 2D with Popov’s mother, Iskra Pourel-Popova, 65, and her boyfriend, David Hanik, 61, about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, waiting for a fifth family member to arrive before they ate dinner, prosecutors said Monday in court.
Apparently without warning, Marek came through the apartment’s front door and fired “numerous shots” with a .40 caliber gun, striking all four, Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy said. Police found all four collapsed on the floor around the dining table, their food untouched.
After Marek exited the front door and headed upstairs, Murphy said, a witness who heard the initial shots saw Marek visibly shaking as he approached Apartment 3C.
Marek entered the unlocked front door and shot Jolanta Topolska, 53, once in the abdomen, the prosecutor said.

Mass murderers (of any stripe) used to end up dead, whether suicide or shot down by the LEOs.
Not so much anymore. Another thing that has changed since the “old days” of about 10 years ago. So we have MORE incidents, and yet FEWER dead perps.
That was my neighborhood many years ago when I lived in Chicago. (WWII time period) The post office was called “Dunning” and there was an ‘Asylum’ there too called Dunning. All in all it was pretty new, pretty quiet and ethnically diverse area then.
What was his legal status as an immigrant?
Don’t f with the crazy dude next door. And these people all knew he was crazy. We need more background on his court records and if he had a violent criminal record how did he get a firearm? once again. Ya don’t f with crazy!
Only thing news worthy in this Chicago shooting is that both victims and shooter are not black
Some may explain this as an undiagnosed, untreated ‘Nervous Breakdown’.
Paranoia, detachment and problems of feeling overwhelmed. Problems that were never thought out, spoken out or straightened out. That family at the dinner table didn’t deserve to suffer because he felt overwhelmed by life.

However, in Illinois, it does not stop accumulation of association dues.
He must have gotten seriously in arrears and the association (his neighbors) tried to evict him to get paid.
What was he on? SSRIs? Antipsychotics? They alwats are.
