President Erdogan received the letter, thoroughly rejected it and put it in the bin.

Maybe it could also pop a whole houseful of popcorn...
I’m serious. We need to be able to remotely cap the leadership of the bad guys. With a technology that NO ONE else has.
Even if he didn’t literally toss it in the trash, he invaded Syria the same day. Pretty much the same message...
I would give it a different name, because having the acronym GOD is blasphemous.
Call it Global Opponent Destroyer
In the bottom of that bin is also his economy.
Invasions take some time to organize, if he went in the next day he had begun preparations long before.
Do you really think anyone was under any illusions to the contrary prior to this?
I think most Americans use to say ‘Erdogan who?’ before it became an opportunity to smear the President.
Yes, we all know you don’t order an invasion after lunch and execute it by dinner. Everyone knew the invasion was coming. My point was that the letter gave him no pause. He disregarded it. Kinda like tossing it in the trash, figuratively.
He's been in the news for quite a while with that failed coup, his rigged elections, his jailing of that missionary, his tilt towards Muslim fundamentalism, and with the murder of Kashoggi on his turf. He's no surprise to anyone who has kept track of the news.
One way of looking at it, is Trump is a boorish fool, who should never have talked to another President that way, and who precipitated a war between Turkey and Syria.
Another way of looking at it, is Trump is a genius master of human psychology, and goaded Erdogan into an action which will ultimately destroy the Turkish Islamic State.
I'm leaning towards the latter.
I saw nothing unusual about the letter. Cut all the BS that diplomats talk.
he read it, that's all that matters
I know the world court says that it is illegal to target heads of state, but it has been said that Ronald Reagan told the Chinese leadership that we had the technology to know where every one of them was at any given time, and in case of conflict that they would be the first, and possibly the only ones targeted. China stayed relatively docile while Reagan was President. Then when pussified democrats got power, China started flexing their muscle again. They have not stopped yet, except that Trump is making them rethink their future actions. Interesting times, eh?
Or, as demonstrated in the letter, Trump knew Erdogan had already committed to invade and the letter Trump included a letter Trump received from the Kurdish general Mazloum, who must also already have been aware of what the Turks were planning and contained unprecedented concessions to the Turks, which has not been released. It was a last ditch effort by Trump and Mazloum to deter, not goad, Erdogan. It is unclear if the Kurd concessions were a result of US pressure to appease Erdogan or if the offer was an idea of the Kurds and Trump merely decided to back the Kurdish carrot with the threat of the stick.
Trump did not need to goad Turkey into invading, Turkey had already decided to do so... the Kurds clearly knew it was coming and decided to offer an olive branch before Trump wrote the letter.
Man, the post office got that letter delivered fast. Trump must have sent it Priority Mail.
