In win for Trump. Democratic Louisiana governor faces runoff

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, will face a Republican candidate in a runoff after he failed to get more than 50 percent of the vote in Saturday's "jungle primary" in his GOP-friendly state.

President Donald Trump rallied on Friday in the state to support the Republican candidates on the eve of the election, calling Edwards "a liberal Democrat who has sold you out." The jungle primary meant that instead of top candidates of each party facing off one-on-one, any number of candidates from any part could compete for a final against the top two.

On Friday Trump asked both Republican candidates, Rep. Ralph Abraham and businessman Eddie Rispone, to join him on stage to offer brief remarks. Rispone will face Edwards after narrowly edging out Abraham.

Louisiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi will tell a lot about what will happen in 2020.

Tate Reeves is the GOP candidate in Mississippi. Tater Tot isn't personally popular, but Democrat Jim Hood has some old tyme racist skeletons in his closet.

I don’t agree, Trump will win all 3 states by a wide margin regardless of what happens in these races. They will turn on local stuff.

I’d sure like to win them though. Plenty of loser RINOs in all 3 states aren’t too keen on supporting the party ticket, they should be read the riot act by the President.

Praying it be so. And that no illegal lefty voting shenanigans are pulled.

For what it’s worth Louisiana is lucky that even a Democrat like John Bel Edwards still has to cater to conservatives and he has passed major pro-life legislation as a result.

I am watching from up in flames (literally. wildfire-ridden.) California and can barely breathe under the weight of the crap going on here.

Thank goodness.

Don’t know why they don’t get rid of his jungle primary BS.

John Bel Edwards*
Democrat 46.6%

Eddie Rispone
Republican 27.4

Ralph Abraham
Republican
317,115 23.6

Anyway it’s Eddie over Ralph.

Nungesser (LT G), Schroder (Treas), Strain (Ag Commish) and Landry (AG) all R win reelection easily.

Donelon (Insurance Commish) wins 53-47 over a fellow Republican.

Acting Sec of State Kyle Ardoin (R) faces a runoff with a rat. 3 GOP combined for 66% in the race.

This jungle primary may have helped soften up Edwards. I think he will have a problem with turnout in the runoff, just an educated guess. He needed to win outright this evening. The only way I can see him winning the runoff is if he can manipulate any disgruntled Abraham supporters into either voting for him or sitting it out. I didn’t have a personal preference here for either.

The GOP made strong gains in the legislature, but the downside being it will be an almost exclusive racial split with very few White Dems and no Black Republicans as far as I can tell. This has got to change and a breakthrough made.

I’m curious about black turnout.

From hayride last night: 7:03 p.m. – There is a little bit of buzz out there that black turnout in Baton Rouge and New Orleans has been very soft.

Edwards took less than 40% of the vote in 2015 while three Republican candidates split 57%. Yet Edwards won the runoff 56% to 44%. This isn’t over, not by a long shot.

I’m in Kentucky. I heard last night that Bevin (the incombent and an R) ran an add against the D opponent (also the son of the corrupt previous governor whose mess Bevin is trying to clean up) about his opponent’s support for transgender girls in girls sports. Apparently it had an 8 point affect in the polls. Democrats in Kentucky are more conservative than Northeastern (or northwestern, for that matter) Republicans. I know a lot of them.

Bevin’s weakness is that he’s trying to get the state employee pension system which is one of the most underfunded in the nation. That means that all the school teachers and their families that I know hate him, even if they are republicans.

David Vitter had his "D.C. Madam" problem. While that might be considered a "plus" if running for governor as a Democrat in New Jersey or Illinois, I doubt it's anything but a lethal blow to a Republican politician in Louisiana.

I agree that "It ain't over till it's over."

Democrat media won’t say anything. Pelosi and Schiff helped to scupper Edwards’ re-election bid.

I hope they keep it up.
