A black Texas woman was shot and killed by a white Fort Worth police officer who was called to the woman's home for a welfare check, authorities said.
In a statement, the department said it received a call at 2:25 a.m. reporting an open front door at a residence. Responding officers searched the perimeter of the house and saw a person standing inside near the window, according to police.
"Perceiving a threat, the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot, striking the person inside the residence," the department stated. In body camera video released by police, two officers search the home from the outside with flashlights before one shouts, "Put your hands up, show me your hands." One shot is then fired through a window.
Officers entered the house and located an individual and a firearm, and began performing emergency medical care.
The department released bodycam footage of the incident "to provide transparent and relevant information to the public as we are allowed within the confines of the" investigation, it stated. Any video taken inside the house could not be distributed due to state law.
The neighbor who called 911 about the open front door told Fox 4 the police officers didn't announce who they were or knock on the door before searching the outside of the house.
"When I made that non-emergency call, I didnt say it was a burglary. I didnt say it was people fighting. I didnt say anything to make them have a gun. All they needed to do is ring the doorbell, James Smith said.

So do I!
I did read another report which said the cop had been on the job since 2018.
A rookie.
Considering that just last week a white police officer was sentenced to prison for murdering a wholly-innocent black man inside his own home, race is kinda newsworthy here.
WTF is that supposed to mean?
She was a pre-med student employed at a local university where she was majoring in biology and chemistry. By all current accounts, a productive member of society gunned down through a window in her own home before she even had a chance to put her hands up.
Amber Guyger Redux.
Just the sexes are reversed.
Race wasn’t relevant in that case, either. She didn’t kill him because he was black she killed him because she was in the wrong apartment. There’s a difference between ignorance and racism- while it’s true that ignorance always accompanies racism, racism only occasionally accompanies ignorance.
It doesn't matter. Perception is what matters and when you have innocent black people murdered in their own homes by white cops, there's no colorblind way to spin it.
“Perceiving a threat, the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot,...”
What exactly was the perceived threat may one so boldly ask?
Nothing like having a bunch of paranoiacs with badges and guns running around loose I always say.
Not sure where you live, but in NYC I first noticed that change in the early 70s.....could have started earlier and I just missed it.
Bullets whizzing by create quite a breeze!
Was this cop immediately drug tested? Maybe his perception was “enhanced”. Airline pilots, ship captains, truck drivers; many people are subject to post accident drug testing. I wonder if LEOs are.
Ive said it before and Ill say it again; police dont show up with psychology manuals, they show up with guns. Always remember that when calling the police, especially on a family member.
Its the posse comitatus work around ala the pariot act. When the dept of ED and NOAA have fully automatic weapons and you don’t.
“called to the woman’s home for a welfare check”
The neighbor saw the front door open but couldn’t walk over and yell in asking her if she was OK?
called to the womans home for a welfare check
Can he still cash the check?
Body cam video
Bad shoot. Instead of shooting he should have just ducked.
ZERO justification for shooting through a closed window into someones home.
Homeowner had every right to arm themselves against unknown people sneaking around, in their yard, in the middle of the night.
I dare say, the homeowner had a more legitimate right to have shot the cop! Unknown ARMED people, brandishing their weapons, with flashlights trespassing on your property in the middle of the night.
A good case could be made. I see ZERO case to be made for this officer. The firing of his weapon in this case was RECKLESS!
REMEMBER... it was just a “welfare check”. Not an armed intruder call.
Hey, at least I’m “nice” about people who put forth wild non-evidenced “linkage” smears.
I’m Jewish and know a smear when I see/hear one. Been experiencing them for over 60 years.
