U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli is being seen as a likely replacement for outgoing Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan, sources tell Fox News -- a move that would be welcomed by immigration hardliners.
President Trump on Friday announced that McAleenan would be leaving the job to spend more time with his family, and added that the new acting secretary would be announced next week.
The announcement immediately led to speculation as to who would step into the vital cabinet position -- one that is a central post for the nation's immigration policy.
A former senior DHS official with close ties to the administration told Fox News Friday that Cuccinelli is on the top of Trumps list to be the next acting secretary. The source noted that a Senate confirmation hearing would be bruising for Cuccinelli but "he, [White House adviser] Steve Miller and Trump are all in sync on a number of key policies.
"They have been trying to clear the way for a while," the source said.
If Trump doesnt go with Cuccinelli, the source said Trump may go with former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach -- another hardliner who has long been floated for a possible administration position but is currently running for the U.S. Senate.
One administration official told Fox News on Saturday that Cuccinelli was in good standing for the position.

That’s the guy from Kansas that’s fully on board with sending back all the illegals, ain’t it?
Unbelievable it took this long.
“McAleenan would be leaving the job to spend more time with his family”
You mean his crime family in the Dem organization?
NVM, I was thinking of Kobach.
Kobach or Homan - or no one.
Thomas Homan
Cuccinelli is viewed by many as a hardliner on illegal aliens.
Kobach's running for the Senate seat Roberts is vacating. If Trump could get him into DHS instead the Kansas GOP would be forever in his debt.
In my view Homan would be great.

RINOs and theRepublican elites dont like Cuccinelli.
Yes to Homan!
“RINOs and theRepublican elites dont like Cuccinelli.”
They abandoned him when he ran for governor. He isn’t “their” kind of Republican.
VIRGINIA, and I worked on his campaign before, and he stumped for another candidate I was working on. He is the real deal and a great choice.
You are correct. They made it impossible to beat the Demonicrat scumbag Terry McAuliffe in the governors race by refusing support of Cuccinelli. That, combined with some typical dem election shenanigans doomed Cuccinelli in the race.
It would be some poetic justice if he were appointed to some high-level federal position where he would have administrative power over the governor of Virginia.
So who’s going to run USCIS?
All I need to hear. Safe to advocate for hin, then.
Cuccinelli would be an excellent choice.
Good news! An easy confirmation would mean "just another deep, deep, deep stater"
If he has a tattoo on his inner thigh that says "Death to all migrant invaders!", he is perfect...
