Look up the Wikipedia entry on Krakow, probably the most historic city in Poland, and one relatively undamaged in WWII.
During the partitions of the 18th century, Galicia represented most of the part of Poland taken by the Hapsburg Empire. Other, larger, chunks went to Prussia and Russia.
Generally, the Poles fared better under Austrian rule than German or Russian. It was never an entirely comfortable political arrangement, but the Poles and the Hapsburg dynasty shared many common values, especially the Roman Catholic faith.
Meanwhile, in the new Germany, Otto von Bismarck was launching a so-called kulturkampf in the 1880s to put Catholics in their place. Even master political manipulators fail from time to time, and this may have been Bismarck’s one biggest flop.
A lot of Poles served in the Hapsburg military, some loyally, some reluctantly. One interesting fact I stumbled across in my reading is that when Poland regained its independence in 1919, a big part of its officer corps came straight from the Hapsburg forces. This definitely provided a leadership advantage when the Poles defeated the Bolshevik hordes outside Moscow in 1920, thereby saving Europe from communist invasion.
Krakow and Galicia were also the home of a particularly vibrant Jewish culture — but we all know how sadly that ended.
