Well I agree with you & Frank, however, since they are a NATO treaty member we cannot just ignore the fact they are an ally. Meanwhile, we have absolutely no binding agreements making the Kurds an ally.

Why are you so insistent that we run to aide the Kurds?

Remember we were allies of Russia during WWII, but bitter rivals after WWII. During that post war time we let lots of others down who had been swallowed up by the U.S.S.R.

We were allies of the Mujahideen when Russia was attacking Afghanistan. A faction of the Mujahideen became the Taliban shortly after Russia pulled out completely.

And this is what you want more of?

This US Special Forces soldier wanted me to know: “The Kurds are sticking by us. No other partner I have ever dealt with would stand by us.”
Disappointed in the decisions coming from their senior leaders.

Acc to this US soldier on the ground tonight in Syria: “The Kurds are as close to Western thinking in the Middle East as anyone. “It’s a shame. It’s horrible.” “This is not helping the ISIS fight.” Re: ISIS prisoners: “Many of them will be free in the coming days and weeks.”

Troops on the ground in Syria and their commanders were “surprised” by the decision Sunday night.
Of the President’s decision: “He doesn’t understand the problem. He doesn’t understand the repercussions of this. Erdogan is an Islamist, not a level headed actor.”

This American soldier told me the Kurds have not left their positions guarding the ISIS prisoners. In fact “they prevented a prison break last night without us.”
“They are not abandoning our side (yet).”
The Kurds are “pleading for our support.” We are doing “nothing.”

“We met every single security agreement. The Kurds met every single agreement. There was NO threat to the Turks - NONE - from this side of the border.” “This is insanity,” the concerned US service member told me. “”I don’t know what they call atrocities but they are happening.”

This veteran US Special forces soldier has trained indigenous forces on multiple continents. He is on the frontlines tonight and said they are witnessing Turkish atrocities.

“Turkey is not doing what it agreed to. It’s horrible,” this military source on the ground told me.

I just spoke to a distraught US Special Forces soldier who is among the 1000 or so US troops in Syria tonight who is serving alongside the SDF Kurdish forces. It was one of the hardest phone calls I have ever taken.

“I am ashamed for the first time in my career.”

Trumps decision makes absolutely no sense. As far as i can tell he didn’t talk to the State Dept. DoD...He just decided to do it....and very thought about the ramifications.

So what is your game plan? We would be setting ourselves up for another protracted war with no end in sight. The definition of insanity is to keep repeating the same mistakes over & over.

So tell me how we help the Kurds for the long term without committing our blood an treasures while the rest of the world remains disengaged.

My point is you can't save everyone, and the Kurds need to figure out how to solve their problem. Why is it always our responsibility? Now if it gets bad and a number of other nations wish to join in and take care of the issue with us, fine. In the end they just blame us anyway, regardless what happens. Wake up, this is not what our military is for. BTW, it wouldn't surprise me if the soldier cited as being ashamed of his country only exists in the imagination of the reporter. For them the ends always justify the means. Facts be damned, and if the narrative doesn't exist, create it out of whole cloth. Because there are always people like you that will buy their lies.

“So what is your game plan? We would be setting ourselves up for another protracted war with no end in sight.”

By keeping 1100(?) troops in Syria would We?

“Why is it always our responsibility?”

This is the price we pay for being the dominate power in the world. Ask yourself this, If not America...Who? Because some nation is going to be dominate. I think it should be America. In spite of mistakes the world is a safer freer more prosperous world because we are the Big Dog.

“Wake up, this is not what our military is for.’Actually Post WWII this is what our military is for.

They are still in Syria, just moved back from the fighting. Why would we put 1,100 troops in harms way when we do not know what show of force Turkey may invoke? If your son or daughter were among the forces would you hold the same opinion as you do now? While I agree that our past Presidents have been famous for getting this country into long protracted wars that do little to actually change the long standing differences between factions, we no longer should do so, regardless of what you and other hawks think. The definition of insanity is to keep repeating our mistakes.

In case you missed these gens:

US forces say Turkey deliberately 'bracketing' American troops with artillery fire in Syria

This may cause President Trump to lower the boom on Turkey, and call for NATO to retaliate with us in unison. We shall see, but that would be a coordinated effort and not the sole effort of this country. Hopefully it make rise for Turkey to be kicked out of NATO as it should been quite sometime ago now. They are gaining privy to NATO tactics while secretly in league with Russia.

Missing the Bigger Picture in Kurdish Syria

The Kurds were engaged in a contractual relationship fighting the Islamic State (ISIS). They were well paid and equipped for their fighting, much like any mercenary group. Further, they were given three years to consolidate eastern Syria to feed their long-held desire to form an independent Kurdistan with other Kurds in Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. They failed.
