Norway’s New Oil Mega-Project Clashes With Growing Focus on Climate
gCaptain ^ | October 7, 2019 | Mikael Holter

The timing of Norway’s biggest oil project in decades is a bit awkward.

Equinor ASA kicked off its massive Johan Sverdrup field, a rare mega-project in the aging North Sea, at a moment where the pressure on the oil industry and governments to act against the climate crisis has never been greater. The field is set to produce crude for 50 years, well beyond the time where the world’s greenhouse-gas emissions should be net zero to avoid warming of more than 1.5 degrees.

Sverdrup’s startup is a “fantastic day for Equinor and state coffers,” economics professor Knut Einar Rosendahl said on Twitter. “Not such a fantastic day for global climate-gas emissions.”

Hey Greta you didn't have to come all the way over here to lecture us on global warming you could have just gone next door to Norway.

CO2 is not a dangerous pollutant, nor does it cause the temperature to rise.

Self-regulating system.

Burn oil
Ice caps melt
Coastal cities, oil fields, refineries submerged
CO2 goes down and earth cools, allowing it to all start again

I learned all that from Greta!!!

Norway’s “socialism” is funded by the north sea oil fields. It took one of the poorest nations on earth and catapulted them into prosperity. I love the place, but fear for their future. This green BS can and will send them back to the days of salt fish and lamb through the winter for survival.

7And I heard the altar reply: “Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are Your judgments.” 8Next, the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was given power to scorch the people with fire. 9And the people were scorched by intense heat, and they cursed the name of God, who had authority over these plagues; yet they did not repent and give Him glory.…

When I visited Norway a few years ago I was really put off by the hypocrisy of the people I met. They went out their way to preach with superior airs about their “pure” environmentalism while totally ignoring the fact that their prosperity is fueled by North Sea oil. Even my wife who’s of Norwegian descent found it noxious. I have no problem with oil. The CO2 scare is a politically designed socialist myth. But I can’t stand “holier than thou” hypocrites.

North Sea oil has been very kind to Norway.

Population - 5.3 million

Sovereign Wealth Fund - $1 trillion - close to $200,000 per citizen

Thanks artichokegrower. Norway isn't in the EU (which comes as a surprise to some people), but is the source of 15 percent of the EU's petroleum supply.

What is it with you people?

That is a lie.

Why do lying come so easy for some people?

Maybe there is no Christian sentiment.

No wonder the constitution is under attack.

Norway, BEFORE OIL, was richer than France at the time.

Re: [North Sea oil] took one of the poorest nations on earth and catapulted them into prosperity.

Norway may have been poor before the 20th Century, but it was never one of the poorest countries in the world.

The worst periods for Norway were closely correlated to crop failures (usually caused by extreme cold) and a growing population.

I tried to find historical data for their GDP, but none of it has been adjusted for inflation or currency, and records only go back to 1960.

In any event, Norway's oil boom did not really kick in until 1970, and Norway was definitely a fully developed country before that happened.

The platforms will receive electricity from Norway’s onshore grid, dominated by hydropower, meaning each barrel of oil will generate 0.67 kilos of carbon dioxide in the production phase, compared to averages of about 9kg in Norway and 18kg globally.

I do not believe those numbers. Actually it is irrelevant if even true which I doubt. The CO2 that is produced from a barrel of oil is about 317 kilos which is 697 pounds.

PS
I worked the North Sea in the 70s during the "Cowboy Days" of exploration. It was wild and fun and dangerous. The Norwegian authorities have wisely imposed safety standards that did not exist back then. This was a result of tragic loss of life in the oilfields back then. These decisions were good. Their decisions about CO2 pollution are idiocy that will do not good but will cost them many billions of dollars.

I was working the Tor Platform in 1978. This was a drilling and production platform. At that time we were producing 70,000 barrels of oil a day. Our energy needs were a small fraction of our daily production. Far less than 1%.

In the words of Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain, "There are liars, damn liars and statisticians."

Re: The CO2 that is produced from a barrel of oil is about 317 kilos which is 697 pounds.

That sounds very strange.

42 gallons in a barrel. I do not know how much a gallon of oil weighs, but water is 8 pounds.

So, it basically sounds like 100% of oil is converted into CO2 after combustion.

I have no idea about the statistics, but they might be including ALL of what it takes to make fuel out of raw oil. Exploration, drilling, ships/trucks/helicopters back and forth, construction of derricks, pipelines, etc. Most especially the amount of energy that is used to refine the raw oil into something usable.

Of course they don’t take all of the construction and development of batteries and solar panels into their CO2 calculations I bet!

Produce for 50 years? That is simply not possible. The world is going to end in 11.43 years or something like that.

That makes sense.

Thanks for the reply.

And - no, they never calculate the upstream and downstream costs of “renewables.”

Most important - you have to build 100% back up electric power to take over at night, on cloudy days, and when the wind does not blow.
