Fairview Heights officials caught off guard that abortion clinic was being built

Fairview Heights city officials said they didn’t know that Planned Parenthood was planning to open a clinic that would offer both surgical and medical abortions.

Mayor Mark Kupsky said the city wasn’t aware of Planned Parenthood’s intentions to move into the former medical office. He said the city only knew that the building was being renovated and a medical organization planned to move into it.

“We did not necessarily know who the tenant was, but that’s not uncommon,” he said. “The zoning allows for that type of use.”

However, Kupsky said, Planned Parenthood has been in Fairview Heights for 19 years. He said while their services are controversial, the organization been in the town for a long time and is only moving locations.

Paul Ellis, the director of economic development, said he also was not aware the clinic was coming.

“It didn’t come through us,” he said.

Planned Parenthood did not try to hide the fact that it did much of the work in secret at 317 Salem Place, saying it wanted to avoid delays brought about by such things as protests and bomb threats.

“We were really intentional and thoughtful about making sure that we were able to complete this project as expeditiously as possible because we saw the writing on the wall — patients need better access, so we wanted to get it open as quickly as we could,” Colleen McNicholas, chief medical officer, told CBS in August.

The building has been under renovation since August 2018.

Planned Parenthood did not need approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, but need to be licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Now that the city knows what can or will they do? Other business are not gonna like having protestors around such a place.

Another reason why Planned Parenthood is not welcome in a community.

I remember when Fairview Heights was a crossroads. Really sad they have planned parenthood there.

Leftists (i.e. Democrats) are a bunch of baby killing murderers. They are all just a cult committed to death.

There is probably very little they can do after the fact, is the reality.

Fairview Heights officials had no idea who was moving into the building?

The new building owners didn’t have to pull any permits to do the renovation work?

What a bunch of liars! You go to any permit department in any city and try to put “I’m renovating” on the application and see how far that gets you. Heck, we can’t even install a new water heater without a permit

Something missing from this story. I finished my daughter’s basement in Fairview Heights a few years ago. I needed a permit. Inspectors visited my project several times. They were thorough. There is no way you can renovate a large building without a permit and many inspections during construction. I am sure medical facilities have rules regarding construction that are much sticker than my basements project.

Yep. Takeaway: Democrats in EVERY level of government lie. Always.

If these “local” officials are so incompetent that they “didn’t know” PP was occupying the building, then they need to go. They’re just flat out lying.

This is how liberals function. This is how they brought in tens of thousands of unwanted immigrants. This is how they stole the entire public education apparatus. This is how they stole the entire entertainment and news media complex.

They're cowardly and opportunistic, and we had better start pushing back before there is nothing left to salvage.

Evidently, there are very specific types of wiring and plumbing needed in medical facilities. My dentist stopped offering gas anesthesia due to the expense of the nickle-plated piping required. Surely such infrastructure is not only required, but needs to be inspected/signed off on.

I’m sure there’s more in the codes, but that is the only anecdotal example I have.

But if someone builds a 6X8 tool shed on their property you’re Johnny on the Spot to show up and raise their assessment.

Building permits dont name tenants, just use. And if the use is within zoning, then there’s nothing anyone can do.

“We did not necessarily know who the tenant was, but that’s not uncommon,” he said. “The zoning allows for that type of use.”

I thought PPs had to apply for special permits wince they aren't a regular medical facility. Hell, even the regular permits for occupation are needed.. How did the city not know at all? Or does PP not have any of their permits yet, just the building stuff through the shell company?

Don’t plans, inspectors, etc. all send records to the city for approval?
