Mitt Romney is a fine and decent person, whom I voted for without regret, then or now, and who strangely just published a scathing op-ed in the Washington Post about President Trump days before assuming office as Utahs newly elected junior senator. But why in the world would he reserve his invective for January, rather than in October, when it surely would have had greater force?
As far as Romneys calls for Trump to be less ad hominem in his retaliatory remarks, he may be right, both in terms of presidential behavior and political wisdom (given that Trump needs to capture 58 percent additional support from suburbanites and minorities). And he is correct to draw attention to reckless federal spending and this apparent bipartisan custom of borrowing a near trillion dollars a year. Let us hope that Romneys proven financial sobriety will help galvanize the congress to prune reckless deficits.
But that said, I fear that much of Romneys invective is utterly incoherent. The departures of many top cabinet officials in some cases were regrettable, in some understandable, but most were likely because Trump ran on an agenda neither traditionally Republican nor Democratic. Trump was the first president without either political or military experience. So there always was also going to be difficulty (and paradoxes) in matching his outsider policies with experienced insider administrators. We should, however, remember that the tenures of Department of Defense secretaries (four in the respective Obama and Truman administrations) and White House chiefs of staff (four respectively for Reagan and Clinton, five for Obama) are historically not always particularly long.
Romney is, euphemistically, accurate in stating that he opposed Trump (Donald Trump was not my choice for the Republican presidential nomination).

We are currently engaged in a war and Romney is jumping at the chance to be this wars Benedict Arnold. All his money isnt going to buy his way back from this.
There is something “off” about Romney. I wonder if it isn’t linked to his cultic faith as the bedrock of his character.
I love VDH but anyone claiming that Romney is fine and decent and merely naive is completely out to lunch on ol’ Mitt.
Not surprising that NR would proudly publish this.
Pretty obvious Romney is part of the Intel Services/DeepState. We are in the opening salvos of a war against us by our own CIA and Romney has been on their side for a long, long time.

Victor must have been drinking......
Mitt Romney is a fine and decent person, WRONG!
Romney was elected Senator in 2018, which would put him up for election in 2024. Maybe he is looking at a 2024 Presidential run. He will be 76, 80 after his first term. Who knows what he is thinking.
There is something off about Romney......
When we think people do stupid things; they are not stupid but for their own benefit.
Mitt Romney
Thinks it is very troubling that President Trump talked to Ukraine.
Well here is his ulterior motive to sell out the Republicans and the President.....
Mitt Romney adviser sits on Burisma board of directors
By Thomas Lifson
Well, this is certainly an odd coincidence! In fact, when you dig in, you find an amazing series of coincidences. If you believe in coincidences when the CIA is involved, that is.
Mitt Romneys national security advisor in his 2012 campaign — a career CIA spook who rose to its top levels — sits on the board of directors of Burisma, the Ukrainian gas company that formerly paid Hunter Biden $50k a month despite his complete lack of credentials or qualifications.
And it also an odd coincidence that Mitt has as CNN puts it been a lone Republican voice expressing concern about President Donald Trump’s July phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky in which Trump asked Ukraine’s President to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his family.
Still more oddly coincidental is the background of Mitts adviser deep in the CIA, part of the intelligence community that has six ways from Sunday in foiling a mere president who might oppose them, according to Chuck Schumer.
“We are currently engaged in a war and Romney is jumping at the chance to be this wars Benedict Arnold.”
If Romney is going to be president, he needs to be elected in 2020 due to his age. He will be 73 in 2020 and 74 during 2021, the first year of the term of the president elected in 2020.
If the Deep State is successful impeaching Trump, and removing him from office by vote of the Senate in early 2020, Pence will appoint the VP but the selection must be approved by a majority of both houses of Congress (25th Amendment). No real conservative will be acceptable to the Democrat controlled House, particularly in an election year. Romney, by openly leading the GOP opposition to Trump in the Senate, may be positioning himself to be a VP choice acceptable to the Democrat House. Of course the Democrats could also stonewall any Republican nominee, leaving Pelosi next in line for succession if something should happen to Pence.
With Romney as VP it is possible the GOP establishment could push Pence aside and serve Romney up as a “moderate” candidate to run against Warren in the fall. The assumption would be the conservative GOP base would unite behind Romney to prevent a socialist/communist from being elected. The strategy would then be to capture enough independents and Democrats who feel a redistributionist leftist is too extreme. Pushing Pence aside is made easier by the current RNC effort to ditch Republican primaries for 2020 in a number of states.
Assume Trump is removed from office and the Democrats in the House block any nominee by Pence for VP. Romney can present himself as the “moderate” alternative to Pence who is too tied to the disgraced Trump and is not capable of working in a bipartisan way with Democrats. He can present himself as the uniter of the nation in a partisan era.
Of course all of this assumes Trump is removed by the Senate. However, removing Trump is Romney’s only remaining chance to be POTUS. By the 2024 he will be 77 and perceived too old in an era where the millennial generation is the major voting block.
Romney’s ambition is not to retire as junior senator from Utah. Trump has to go for him to have another presidential run. Leading the GOP opposition to Trump in the Senate early and aggressively is his only play. Can he persuade 19 other GOP Senators to vote to convict in the Senate? If so, pushing Pence aside and winning the nomination in a brokered convention is very feasible.
First 8 words was enough. Bye, Hanson.
VDH states that little intro about Romney being naïve and then efficiently and thoroughly dismembers Romney bone by bone.
He is also giving a earful to the fools at NR
Masterful writing.
read the rest, he savages him without even trying
IMHO, the fact that VDH was WAY off the mark about Trump initially or even supported Romney when he was running against Obama doesn't mean he still isn't worth reading.
Except Trump is GOP. As much as they hate it. The GOP cannot damage Trump and expect GOP voters to sit still for that. If this is really Romneys dream hes an idiot. I dont think Americans are going to sit idly by and watch all this happen when we have a target we can focus on and destroy that target ourselves. The CIA/FBI. The are corrupt and have to go. Period. Let the military do Intel and State Police do FBI job. Or we have a Civil War and they will be destroyed along with a lot of other things and people.
There was nothing “fine and decent” about Mitt Romney. No more than Jimmy Carter, who was also a posturing, dissimulating totalitarian.
I refused to vote for him, for reasons which are now tolerated here on this venue when articulated, but got thousands of people the zot in yesteryears.
Embracing the likes of Romney, Ryan, Boehner, etc etc because one is terrified of the wails of “PELOSI/SHUMER/CLINTON/OBAMA!!!!!!” only guarantees there will be no credible alternative to the left you so fear.
Go “radical” for freedom, and be willing to take the cuts and bruises, meaning that one may lose elections in saving the culture. Stay home when the party put up such people as candidates.
state police in many areas are corrupt.
Then those states can either do something or live with it.
Romney knows he choked. Trump stated the naked truth in 2016 and Romney will never get over his hatred of Trump for it.
