The statement was given after an impromptu meeting with Liberman ahead of Rivlin-brokered talks with Netanyahu
Blue & White leader Benny Gantz may be ready to concede his party's position against joining a government with incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he faces possible indictment in a number of corruption cases.
"We'll see what happens," Gantz told i24NEWS when asked if he would form a unity government with incumbent Prime Minister Netanyahu ahead of their meeting with President Reuven Rivlin Tuesday night.
The statement was given following an unannounced meeting between Gantz and Yisrael Beitenu's Avigdor Liberman in Jaffa.
Meanwhile, kingmaker Avigdor Liberman said after the impromptu meeting that the crux of the disagreement with Netanyahu lies is over who would serve first as premier in a rotational deal between the top candidates.
He reiterated that the only option is a national unity government joining his party with Likud and Blue & White, excluding the religious and Arab parties.
The possibility of being part of a government with Netanyahu would mark a significant change from the party's platform, with Blue & White leaders stressing their refusal to join the Likud in a coalition that includes the enduring premier while there are outstanding charges against him.
I believe Bibi is toast.
Good news.
Unity gov would mean that Netanyahu is still in the game.
why would they not include the religious or arab coalition...
hmmmm
Yes, it is good news that Netanyahu is still in the game.
The deal must include dropping any charges or investigations and stating that Bibi will be the only PM.
I wouldn’t be that optimistic. I personally like Netanyahu but Israel’s politics are pretty much third world. He was on top since 1996 with little exceptions. Losing power means prison more likely than not in his case. Gantz is acting like a cat playing with mouse in this case.
Gantz price for a unity government is no Netanyahu. Netanyahus price is to include his whole coalition, including religious parties.
Third election...
Bibi is the supposed crook.
For a small nation of immigrants it was important for Bibi to get endorsement from great powers. US, Japan, China, India refused to accept his visit, he didn’t even try with France because the outcome was clear. Only BoJo and Putin agreed to meet him. BoJo demanded two state solution and Putin said I am for everything Israel choose for itself (sorry, Bibi, I like you but business comes first).
Bibi is toast.
“why would they not include the religious or arab coalition...”
Because neither puts you over the top, simple math.
Ummm, that wouldn't be a deal, that would be Blue & White simply conceding the election to Bibi and letting Likud do whatever they want.
LOL! The only deal Netanyahu could possibly get is dropping the charges with the written promise that Netanyahu leaves the Israeli government, including the Knesset, foreign service and the premiership.
I wouldn't be surprised if an agreement along these lines includes a total gag order
he goes away and shuts up.
Bibi is in the catbird seat. He has at his side the support of the Jewish people in Israel and all orthodox, unorthodox and ultra-orthodox means at his disposal to win.
