Well written & true.

As Hoapres on the old Dice job board put it:

Your best bet is to abandon IT. Best of luck.

Spintreebob,

How much were they willing to pay the IT workers?

There are people in their late 40s and 50s who are unemployed and underemployed...They are here on FR, IT people who cannot find good IT work...Can’t get past the Taleo firewalls...or expected to work for peanuts...

A couple years ago, my spouse, who has PhD with background in stats, was looking to return to work after taking early retirement...Wanted to do stats in a different sector ...Had a lot of trouble finding someone who would give a chance...ageism boosted by cheap foreign labor...First offer was an Indian placement firm offering insultingly low offer...

Fast forward to Trump economy now, happily doing the stats...Interesting fact #1 works with many Indians located here and in India...Interesting fact #2...told me managers working from India are making 30,000 to do work that would pay much much more here...

So are firms considering older workers, and are they paying competitive wages?

I think by not standing up to this, we allow for more job destruction...and it is spreading to other careers besides coding (see below)...We are contributing to the prolem if we don’t try to stop it...

Right now there may be a lot of demand for auto mmechanics HVAC, plumbers, etc. but there is a limit to how many of those jobs are available...and over supply of workers means salaries will drop...

I have kids who have PhD and MS in STEM careers-—Hard to walk away now. Huge investment of resources...

BTW, I am painting STEM careers with broad brush...the H-1B invasion is not limited to IT...it has branched out into various accounting careers as well as medical careers...including nursing thanks to Rand Paul :/

One more thought, seems IT takes both sides of the argument...They can’t find qualified people...but they can find them in India...

And while they say they cannot find qualified workers here, they are hiring hundreds or more of H-1B cheap-labor express workers who are often being trained by the older IT workers here in US who they are replacing...

Does not ring true to me...

I don’t think US should be supporting Indian and Chinese economies which is what we are doing...

"Green Card Giveaway to Indian Workers by Sept. 27"

Notice that they are not particularly interested in setting aside green cards for engineers or scientists from say Germany, the UK, Japan, Taiwan or Korea.

Why?

Because they aren't cheap to acquire (if you could even get them).

It will be hard for your kids to walk away. At some point, they may be left with no other choice.

From a geo-political perspective, India is a friend of the US. Modi is the Dondald Trump of India and a friend. It is the Modi fans in the US that Donald Trump needs.

Mainland China is just the opposite. No friend, not likelihood of friendship with the government, the communist party, or in government contolled industry.

India can be compared to the US in exactly the same way that my former Illinois can be compared to my current Georgia. I am a immigrant, a yankee who invaded Georgia, as are thousands of us from Rust Belt Cities.

State Farm (my former client) is shifting thousands of jobs (IT and insurance) from Illinois to Georgia and thousands of jobs from Illinois to Texas... and I don’t know how many to Arizona. A big loss for a Blue state and a big gain for Red States.

Modi is far closer to Trump in ideology, in sympathy, in practical alliance than the politicians in Illinois.

To shift the topic slightly: Where are these American IT workers? They arn’t in Blue Illinois... anymore. They aren’t (enough) in booming Georgia. Where are they?

Were are the IT workers? I think the IT HR firewalls have and are screening out many qualified candidates...Yes, it is easy to apply for dozens of jobs daily with Indeed, Glassdoor, etc. However, due to the global numbers of resumes coming in to HR, they set the screens very high.

I have received personal Freepmail from IT Freepers, one in particular I remember who told me they gave up after 7 years of trying during Obama’s reign...

If you read the Breitbart article the US graduates far more STEM students than are being placed...They cannot all be unqualified...If you do a Breitbart search, you can see all the articles related to displaced US workers...

So do I take their reporting or your observation?

I guess the US is the red state equivalent in your example...And like GA, who likely does not like Liberals moving down from Chicago, US does not like foreign workers moving in taking US jobs or stealing US technology from offshore...

Unlike Georgia, the US does not have to allow this...Our government is choosing to allow it...And I understand Trump wants a good working relationship with Modi, but I don’t believe that US IT workers should have to pay the price....

Well, I think it is important that baby boomers do their best to help ensure a vibrant job market for our children and grandchildren—US jobs for US workers...so they don’t have to walk away...

As noted in some Breitbart articles, there is “H-1B Visa creep” into other fields such as accounting and nursing...

If we can protect industries like mining/steel, why not protect our IT workers’ jobs? And with the national security implications of Chinese technology theft, it makes a lot of sense to do so.

Yup!!

I am calling it “H-1B Visa Creep” into other occupations...

No occupation is going to be safe in the future if this continues :/

Their new complex in Tempe, AZ is gigantic - I think over 6,000 people. Tell Pritzker we got his missing tax revenues right here. :)

If Tucker complains about this on his show, if he goes all out against it Trump might listen and realize Tucker represents MAGA on this issue. Otherwise it’ll be signed unfortunately
