Tina Turner believed that she and Ike were the reincarnation of god-kings from ancient Egypt. That, she reasoned, was why theyd been reincarnated in Memphis, Tenn.; their souls would feel at home in a city that, like Memphis in ancient Egypt, was sited on a big river and noted for its artisanry. In a perversion of Buddhism by celebrity culture, people select past lives that are more interesting than their present ones. Plenty of people believe they used to be Napoleon Bonaparte, but when was the last time you met someone who boasts of having been an illiterate Corsican goat-herder who married his cousin?
Talking of inbred illiterates and country matters, the past lives of the British aristocracy retain their appeal too. The present lives of the aristocracy are less appealing. The poor things were hunted to near extinction by estate taxes after the War; the survivors are reduced to selling tickets to rubberneckers and running tearooms in the stables. Some of the most ardent purchasers of tickets, scones and souvenir coffee mugs come from nations who, in a moment of past-life lunacy, purged themselves of their upper classes. A torrent of Chinese, Russian, French and, of course, American visitors wander through the big houses of England, all wondering what it must have been like to have been the 12th Duke of Buggerly, with all that land and all those servants.

I have to confess, I loved the show.
No appeal to me whatsoever. In fact, REVULSION is my gut reaction to tripe such as this. The wife is a different story.
I’m willing to bet a paycheck or two this is the case across most of Red State America.
I make no claim at all concerning those residing in Blue States. The Lemmings I’ve met, even among those who claim to be Conservatives in those states ARE NOT in my estimation.
They merely see themselves as such because they are surrounded by Extreme Leftists.
I have a friend who observed that he loved his wife enough to watch an occacional movie with her, but not so much as to watch a series.
My wife (as well as my former pastor) loved the series. There are many things that might be said about it, some positive, some not so much. It stars neither John Wayne nor Jimmy Stewart, and the diretor is neither Ford nor Hitchcock: while other people can decide what to do with their own time, that is pretty well enough information for me to make a decision in terms of willingness to commit such a large chunk of time.
As for what others may choose, I know not, but of the people that I know who do like the series nearly all “Never Cried When Old Yeller Died,” and that is enough for me. I refuse to be railroaded into watching. Daddy never was the cadillac kind.
See post 3 for a hearty “Amen” to your post.
I couldn’t help but notice within your response you noted your Ex-Pastor. If he was a fan of this garbage I can Understand why you dumped him/her.
As for me, I don’t understand anyone claiming to be a Conservative giving a fraction of a second of their time to anything remotely associated with Hollywood or, any of the major networks or, the major cable channels.
Every single one of them stands firmly against everything we Constitutional Conservatives / America and, Patriotic Americans stand for.
That said, we must ALL realize that the Progressive Liberals are very adept at infiltrating us just as they have infiltrated our gov’t, schools, churches, etc...
You give me too much credit. I’m Catholic, and so used to putting up with all sorts of things. He was better than Athaliah. And Athaliah is an ancestress of Our Lord, so who am I to judge? He also had some good points—most people do.
That said, if I’ve got a choice that works with my other duties in life, I will vote with my feet.
I have your same problem with understanding.
The former pastor had similar problems understanding why people didn’t show up for daily Mass at a higher rate (in a local that was pulling about 10% at a daily rate which is phenomenal). That’s because he was being very logical and assuming everyone else is logical.
Basic answer: God is Great, beer is good, and people are crazy. Or in two words: Original Sin.
However, I loved Mr. Selfridge even more. Based on a true story, though I'm sure there were some not entirely true story lines scattered in. Though research led me to believe that most, if not all, were fairly accurate representations of the real happenings.
In many ways the 2 series played in harmony with each other.
The Paradise was also an interesting and entertaining show, though it was based upon fiction.
Loved the show and will love the movie. Maggie Smith is a gem.
Loved the TV show, but not the movie, which we saw Thursday night.
A few months later, I saw that a remake of the Charge of the Light Brigade was coming out. I went and saw it in downtown Chicago, on the big screen.
It was an education... I finally researched it. The book, The Reason Why, was revealing...
You said, I’m Catholic. I understand. The Love of my life, my Wife, is Catholic. I am not. I am an Orthodox. Greek Orthodox to be exact.
I have attended Mass in the Catholic Church with my wife. She has attended Greek Orthodox Mass in my Church.
Both my Church and hers conduct the traditional Latin Mass. We look at each other and wonder what is the difference?
Outwardly, there is very little difference. The Pope of course is a prime sticking point.
So, we avoid all discussions of this prime difference. That is, until recently.
My wife, a devout Catholic, for the first time in her life, has doubts about the Pope COMPLETELY due to this current Pope.
For the first time in her life she doesn’t believe in or trust a word this current Pope says about anything.
She believes this Pope is an Infiltrator. A Subversive.
And, she is very distressed about it. I keep my mouth shut. I agree with her 100%.
Word on the street is that the Downton Abbey movie is pro-Brexit. So I might watch it just to upset an SJW or two.
I loved it until the homo promo.
Then I was out!
The BBC is obsessed with homos right now, have to have it in everything. Its ruined a lot of stuff for me that was otherwise worthwhile.
I watch British TV series especially Midsomer Murders, Endeavour, Morse, Lewis and Father Brown. (No Hollywood shows).
Ive seen several of the major Downton actors in plays and a charity cabaret in London and they were great. However, I tried twice to get interested in the series but never was able to.
I did like that Hugh Bonneville of the show yesterday got an Instagram message that a fan said her family feels like the characters were part of their own family. Bonneville quickly replied See you at Thanksgiving.
Thats why I wont go see it.
I enjoyed both Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge.
I’m looking forward to seeing the movie!
Ed
I understand completely.
The only point concerning your wife’s observations on the Pope that I would not consider venting publicly myself is the phrase “Infiltrator and Subversive.” The phrase undoubtedly must be applied to some of those who put him where he is, and many of those whom he trusts—but I am not sure I would apply those precise words to the Pope himself. It seems to me sufficient to apply the term “Jesuit” and possibly the adjective “Jesuitical” which are much broader and flexible in their meaning—certainly it is possible for a Jesuit to be an Infiltrator and Subversive, in both the negative and positive senses of the term, but they also think and operate differently and can easily present one face while also having another. They can be duplicitous in the most good-intentioned way, which might cause them to be mistaken for being subversive. I don’t believe it is inherent to the Jesuits to be this way, or that all Jesuits are this way. To me, there seems to be a strong tendency, and I must confess that I may be a little prejudiced in that I fall into the Dominican/Carmelite/Oratorian spiritual school, and in the end, who am I to judge?
Certainly, the Pope is a sticking point, and we (particularly the poor Latin rite) are stuck with someone that I believe even y’all recognize as the patriarch of the west.
I would love to escape the modern Latin rite, but that seems to be where providence has stuck me for my present time on earth.
My comments concerning my former pastor are actually modifications of my thoughts on the present Pope. Somebody has to be the worst Pope ever—I’m not saying Francis is or isn’t, there are a half-dozen or so good candidates, in my opinion, and who am I to judge? I do think that at least a few of the Old Testament leaders of the chosen people were worse, so God can and has worked through worse—and that strengthens my hope.
That said, if there were a nearby Orthodox Church and the Orthodox were as open to intercommunion as Latins are in theory, it would be worth considering shifting where I attended, and there would be no need to sort out the hierarchical fine points. As it stands, I think the official Latin position on intercommunion is correct, at least for Latins, but I can understand and respect the Orthodox position—though I have a hard time reconciling this with the WCC membership.
funny listening to an avowed leftist and trump hater wax eloquently about Downton Abbey and the upcoming film, while a few days before, talking about her love of the film THE HELP.
No second level thinking there.
“I loved it until the homo promo.”
My sister and I saw it on Friday in Knoxville. When that scene came, the whole theater groaned and/or said “eeewwww!”. Living in the Bible Belt is a good thing.
I never saw one episode of the series, but did go to the movie. Not knowing the history of the characters, plot, etc., I don’t think I got it as well as others.
I loved the costumes and period setting.
Interesting to see Elizabeth McGovern, whom I loved in “ Ordinary People” and “Ragtime”. She has not aged well, though.
I recall being hooked on “Upstairs Downstairs” in the ‘70s.
