The Ridiculous Anti-Vaping Crusade
The National Review ^ | September 20, 2019 | RICH LOWRY

Posted on 09/21/2019 8:50:09 AM PDT by kingu

Never before has a boon to public health been met with such hysteria and ingratitude.

Vaping is almost all upside in comparison with traditional smoking, a wanton destroyer of health and lives, and yet the nation is in the grip of a panic about e-cigarettes.

In a rarity for the Trump era, the anti-vaping sentiment jumps traditional geographic and political bounds, running from the Oval Office to San Francisco, from President Donald Trump to his most fervent enemies.

Trump announced a Food and Drug Administration ban on flavored e-cigarettes last week, while not too long ago the San Francisco Board of Supervisors banned the sale of vaping products at retail outlets and — seemingly more persnickety about this than, say, the use of heroin or public defecation — prohibited their delivery to addresses in the city.

Well if drug legalization, controls and rules are at the state level, good. That’s the kind of constitutional “civil disobedience “ we need against Feds and doj.

I’d rather have states decide these things as they really should as a means of exercising their legitimate power and denying it to a corrupt federal government and “justice” system that protects elites and rapes citizens rights.

Marijuana is bad, federal government is worse.

What’s generating the excitement is that “popcorn lung” is showing up among some vape users. This is serious lung damage.

The suspicion is that it isn’t due to mainstream vape products from outfits like Juul. It’s likely from an oil carrier being used in some flavored vapes.

Vaping is new enough that this is the guinea pig stage for those who are vaping.

In much of the world they mix tobacco with the marijuana.

DC isn’t a state. Really just a collection of reparations seekers and stoners.

She had a crazy personality—I would never have wanted to live with her, for sure.

But—she understood the importance of liberty for everyone.

I wish more Freepers believed in freedom. :-(

The trouble is, it’s fairly easy to mix hash oil with the vaping substrate and make a solution intended to get the user high. I imagine there are commercially produced THC vape products in every dispensary in these cities that are frantically banning non-THC versions. And black market - anything can be put in those tubes.

I wish more Freepers believed in freedom.

There is no freedom in addiction for kids who start and become addicted to nicotine.

People become addicted because they’re unloved.

No, I was not wrong because that was not now. It was then.

Vape wasn’t even really a thing yet.

Many potheads were all too apparently against tobacco and the study popped up which gave a reason why when if anything they should be for tobacco too, were they consistent.

Remember, that old 70s song that went in part “he can’t even run his own life I’ll be damned if he’ll run mine”?

Well. it was speaking only part of the truth. The whole truth is those same people from the 60s and 70s really didn’t want people getting in the way of them getting their jollies ... but when it came time for it they have proven with the nanny state to be perfectly fine telling everyone how to do or to not do anything (but especially not sex) so long as it’s them that’s doing the telling.

The government resents competition. It sells pot and rakes in money from taxes on cigarettes.

She’s 82 and a lifelong smoker who switched to vape a few years ago you’re saying

I assume she already had COPD and other pulmonary issues after smoking cigarettes that long

My wife smoked Reds and Lights from 1982-2012

She switched to vaping 6mg Saffire tobacco vape juice and now 7 years later she never hacks at all and zero wheeze

And I know plenty others

I do know one young woman who switched from cigs to vape and started having more bronchitis type symptoms

Doc wasn’t sure but surmised it was the moisture smoke in her longs aggravating her lungs

I’ve paid a lot of attention to this. All of the deaths had other circumstances involved besides vaping.

Around 20 percent of the population vape tobacco or marijuana at some point

I see no proof yet it’s an endemic health issue beyond the traditional nicotine cardiac axis

All the nicotine that goes into those vapes has to come from somewhere!

Please excuse me a moment as I vent in the direction of people making bad choices and also at those wanting the government to step in.

This isn’t directed at you in any way, shape or form.

It sucks to be them. But they made their choices and can live, or die, with the consequences.

It isn’t the nation’s responsibility to make sure people’s lives don’t suck. Even dire circumstances aren’t delegations of power to permit the federal to do anything about them.

That’s true if their lungs are falling apart because of something they chose to do, or it they borrowed tens of thousands to learn from idiot SJWs how to be an idiot too, or any such thing.

People whose first demand is that there ought to be a law (insert here) should be tarred and feathered along with the politicians eager to reap power from them.

Also, not venting at the world but conversing with you: yes ... idiots are apparently smoking vitamin E oils. And I’m sure there’s someone somewhere experimenting to see if they can vape bacon (yes, I know, now that I’ve mentioned it someone will even if they weren’t).

For the record I smoked Winstons , Reds, Camels, Luckies, and Gitanes and Gauloise from 1972-1992

I quit on my own.

But I love cigarettes and cigars

Not like sex but certainly one of life’s pleasures

Young folks should enjoy but know they must quit by age 30

I think I liked cigars more than ciggies.

The kind that burned your nose.....La Gloria Cubano Soberano

Four sticks a day....even in bed post “ bible study”

My wife was a peach

Here’s what we need to get past. Anytime a state or even a dysfunctional entity like DC takes power from feds that almost always a good thing. Because our primary goal should be to reduce the federal power not explicitly enumerated in the constitution.

It’s easier to do something about a bad state law. But bad fed laws are like herpes, they last a lifetime.

RJR is not the only tobacco company investing heavily in vaping and marijuana... they almost are all doing it. They see this as their future.
