A call-center scammer has lost his appeal to overturn a $9m fine – after a court pointed out the crook had specifically waived the right to appeal when he pleaded guilty.
Viraj Patel was part of a large India-based criminal enterprise that conned tens of thousands of Americans out of hundreds of millions of dollars: the swindlers would cold-call citizens and pose as US government officials demanding payment for unpaid taxes.
But, it turns out that he wasn’t listening very carefully to either his lawyers or the federal district judge who sentenced him in Texas, because Patel was seemingly convinced he was only going to have to pay $250,000. When he realized the real fine was actually $9m, he tried to undo his guilty plea, and appealed to the Fifth Circuit claiming a miscarriage of justice.

Well this is a none violent crime so according to slow Joe he shouldn’t do jail time!

One method I have found effective is keeping one of those air horn canisters close by. I always push whatever to speak to a person. When the person picks up I give them a loud blast. They never call back.

The fine can be paid with a gift card from any major store.
We're getting a lot of those now. Sometimes, when answering the call, or even if the answering machine picks up, a message starts playing immediately. After a short introductory sentence, the voice says "Can you hear me OK?" I wonder how many people immediately say "Yes".
Most silicon valley, amazon,etc are Indians hired to replace Americans. The gop and koch bros has a law almost thru congress to continue massive indian job invasion for 10 years.
I turned the bell off the phone. My friends have learned to leave me a message. We were getting about 20 robo calls a day and became tired of it.
I believe in capital punishment for cases of murder, rape and telemarketing.
I wish they would make him run around town buying up $9 million in Prepaid Apple iTunes cards to pay the fine.
A scammer tried to call my cell phone yesterday. The number showing up on caller id was the number of my cell phone. Kind of hard to block yourself....
One used the same trick with my landline a few months ago.
Problem is, these scammers can fake the caller ID number as being whatever they want, including the real number of your local hospital.
Scammer that do that should not be fined, they should be subjected to a Singapore lashing.

I guess I'm not seeing the downside for him, unless they seized everything and he didn't have more than 9M$ stowed somewhere.

I did away with a land line in the early 2000’s. And when my cell phone rings, I do not answer unless it is a number in my contact list.
If they don’t leave a message, they really didn’t need to reach me. And if they do leave a message, I can easily determine if it is a scam or a robo call. I then block the number but also know the scammers will just come up with new numbers to call from. But being able to prescreen calls is a great thing.
I did get a voice mail late last year that was supposedly from “Brad Johnson” from the IRS. “Brad” was calling to tell me there was an arrest warrant out for me for unpaid taxes and that unless I called him back in the next hour, the local Sherriff would come to my home or place of business to arrest me. But that I could avoid arrest if I called him back and made immediate payment arrangements. “Brad” however sounded more like an extra from Slum Dog Millionaire than he did an actual IRS agent - and trust me, I once legitimately owed money to the IRS and this is not how they operate – official and lengthy legal documents sent via certified return receipt mail – yes, some guy calling in the middle of the night named “Brad” wanting you to pay your tax bill via a Western Union money transfer or via Amazon gift cards in order to avoid immediate arrest – not so much.
The sad thing is despite all the warnings and educational materials and press articles about these scammers, is how many people still fall for them.
How about we deport Mike Lee to India & call it a day?
