Longtime journalist Cokie Roberts dies at age 75
The Hill ^ | 09/17/19 | Joe Concha

ABC News, NPR and PBS journalist and political commentator Cokie Roberts has passed away at age 75, according to a network announcement.

"Cokie Roberts will be dearly missed," said James Goldston, president of ABC News. "Cokie's kindness, generosity, sharp intellect and thoughtful take on the big issues of the day made ABC a better place and all of us better journalists."

From 1996-2002, Roberts co-anchored ABC’s "This Week" with Sam Donaldson. She also served as a political commentator and chief congressional analyst for "This Week" during her tenure at ABC dating back to 1988.

Her best line was about how Bush sent women into frontline combat during the Iraq War.

Paraphrasing:

We used to talk about sending our boys off to war. Now we're sending our men and women to war. We always knew that it takes a woman to turn a boy into a man.

Her ancestors (at least some) were in the Southern colonies for hundreds of years. Some probably were slave-owners. Her father was a segregationist at one time...

” After Brown v. Board of Education, he signed the Southern Manifesto condemning desegregation in the 1950s and opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Unlike most other Southern Representatives, however, he supported the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Open Housing Act of 1968. He was instrumental in passage of the interstate highway program in 1956.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hale_Boggs

She did not bother me as much as some of the more recent “journalists,” but she was a leftist for sure. I hope her family finds peace.

came to see if anyone here has anything good to say about her.

thinking of my mom saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, just say nothing at all.”

.... nothing at all. You can quote me.

Cokie Roberts
From Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cokie_Roberts#Background

Background

[Excerpt:]
“Cokie Roberts’s mother was ambassador to the Holy See and long-time Democratic Congresswoman from Louisiana, Lindy Boggs. Her father was Hale Boggs, a Democratic Congressman from Louisiana. He was Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and a member of the Warren Commission. After Hale Boggs was lost on a plane which disappeared over Alaska on October 16, 1972, Lindy was elected to fill his seat in Congress.[6] Cokie was the couple’s third child and eldest daughter. Her sister, Barbara Boggs Sigmund, was mayor of Princeton, New Jersey, and a candidate for U.S. Senate from New Jersey. Her brother Tommy Boggs was a prominent Washington, D.C., attorney and lobbyist.[7]

Roberts attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls school in New Orleans, before graduating from the Stone Ridge School, an all-girls school outside Washington, D.C., in 1960.[8]”

Cokie Roberts has been praised by Democrats as one of the founding mothers of NPR.

“Aging feminist Cokie Roberts has been a leading media liberal for decades, thanks in no small measure to her heritage as the daughter of Congressman Hale Boggs and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs, who succeeded her husband after his mysterious death.”

"Reminder: Free Republic has a long tradition of being respectful of our enemies, on obituary threads."

"Were you able to type that with a straight face? Oh, and you oh me a new keyboard because of the coffee you made me spray on it."

This is actually true. When I first joined, there was an unwritten understanding that we would actually wait at least a day or two to start piling on someone who had just died (unless they were especially heinous, like Charlie Manson, etc.). People now can't wait to be the first to say something nasty about someone who just died.

Twenty years ago it wasn’t foolish to expect some measure of ordinary etiquette from political opponents. It was not conservatives who changed that.

"Twenty years ago it wasn’t foolish to expect some measure of ordinary etiquette from political opponents."

I wouldn't expect it from my opponents today, but I would expect it of myself and those allied in my Conservative views. The whole idea of being a Conservative is to "conserve" what is good in our values and culture, not to go down the sewer with those who are trying to destroy them.

Personally, I would not degrade myself to employing the classless tactics of my enemies if it results in nothing greater than simply bringing me down to their level. Otherwise, we are really no better than they are.

“Her father was on the Warren Commission.”

Yes. He was on the Warren Commission.

Someone also pointed out something I’d forgotten which is after her father was killed in a plane crash, her mother took over his congressional seat.

So both her parents were democrat congressional representatives.

RIP....that being said, she worked at NPR as a “journalist” so she was not a journalist. She pretended well and probably lived well.

There are few “journalists” these days, they pretty much are all propagandists.

Funny how none of the obits I’ve seen mention her father being a long-time Southern Democrat Congressman. Or her mother inheriting the office.

I don't know what obits you're reading, but almost all of the ones that were more than a couple of paragraphs talked about it, including the New York Times, NPR, ABC, NBC, CBS, and The Washington Post.

So I guess the question is what sources are YOU reading that are hiding this fact?

"Wow she died 17 years after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer."

Cokie's family (Claiborne) was local to where I grew up. I went to elementary school with her first cousin. Said cousin also died of breast cancer.

Many women (my mom included) have a first round with breast cancer, have a mastectomy, beat the cancer, and then have it recur in the other breast years later.

Please, girls/women....."if" you have BC, get rid of BOTH of them. I encouraged my wife to do so, and she did, thank God. I don't love hear any less because she lacks t*ts. Your husband won't either (if he is worth keeping).

She was a lady, personally and professionally. R.I.P.

Nothing like the brainless malignancies that currently infect the cables and alphabets. (some exceptions on Fox)
