Prospects for a bipartisan deal on gun control legislation have dimmed significantly as President Trump and Democratic leaders appear to be far apart on the key issue of expanding background checks.
Republicans expect Trump to put forward a proposal addressing gun violence later this week, but Democrats predict it is likely to fall far short of what is needed and that they may not vote for it.
Democrats are pressing Trump to agree to a gun control bill already approved by the House, but the president has yet to even signal support for a scaled-down background check bill sponsored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).
“I don’t think anyone thinks he’s going to endorse the Toomey bill, which is weaker than the House bill,” said a senior Democratic aide, expressing growing doubt on Capitol Hill that Trump will strike a bipartisan deal.

If I were President Trump, I would offer a deal like this:
We create a Blind Identification Database System (BIDS) so that private sellers can determine if a person they do not know is a prohibited possessor.
In exchange, we pass national reciprocity for anyone who can legally carry openly or concealed in the state they hold residence in.
Win-Win.
This does nothing to create a registration system. It creates a Universal Background Check without any records identifying people being held by the government; it recognizes the "bear" part of bearing arms over the whole country.
It would not be accepted by the Democrats, and President Trump could say: see, I offered, and they refused.
The Democrats have only one objective with “background checks”, it is to build a database of who has the guns, and who is purchasing them. All this is a prerequisite to confiscation at some future time.
Criminals, of course, would be missed this dragnet almost entirely, as they obtain guns by extralegal channels, which do not much include any kind of applications to a state or federal agency, and are always either cash-and-carry or the five-finger discount (flat out STEALING the gun).
I still stand by the alternative, which is to fully educate EVERY American on the duties and responsibilities of handling weapons safely and within the bounds of the law. By widespread exposure to the whole culture of gun possession, it would become relatively obvious those persons who are so deathly afraid of guns they could never be induced to handle them, and those who are of such warped moral fiber that they must never be ALLOWED to come into possession of the array of weapons out there, and not just guns, but or every other kind of device which can inflict harm or death on another.
The remainder, which would be far the largest part of those exposed to information about guns of all kinds, would then be free to engage in further training and education in the care, feeding, grooming, safety requirements, and the skills necessary to select targets judiciously, to frame, aim, and with respectable accuracy, direct fire at the chosen target.
GOOD! I don’t believe in any gun control laws. NONE! They don’t work. Never have and never will. The amendment says ‘’shall not be infringed’’. Criminals don’t obey they law, that’s the basic job requirement. Everybody knows that except for most politicians. It’s as if they’re these idiots think that the next hare brained gun control law they come up with is going to be the one that finally works. Idiots, all of them, Too freakin’ stupid to be idiots!.
