Make No Mistake: The GOP is Losing Texas: 5 Congressmen Have Resigned Instead of Seeking Re-election
American Thinker ^ | 09/13/2019 | Joshua Foxworth

To date, five congressmen from Texas have resigned instead of seeking re-election in 2020. Their resignations signal two things from GOP leadership. The first is the realization that Texas is now lost. The second is that this loss is due entirely to the changing demographics resulting from legal and illegal immigration.

The five congressmen that have resigned are Bill Flores (17th), Will Hurd (23rd), Pete Olson (22nd), Kenny Marchant (24th), and Mike Conaway (11th). Of these five, Congressman Conaway is unique in that his district will likely remain red for some time. He has not faced an opponent in numerous election cycles.

Congressman Hurd’s district 23 has always been very competitive with the victors winning the general elections by an average of about 1% in the last three elections. The district follows the border with Mexico, and it is a bit surprising that Republicans have been able to get elected at all considering it is 24% white and 69% Hispanic.

In 2012 and 2016, the Republican in district 23 was able to outspend opponents by a margin of 2 to 1. In 2018, the Democrats actually outspent the Republicans in that district by a slight margin of 6 to 5. The fact that the Republican was the incumbent was likely the sole deciding factor in the Republican victory. With that same Democratic candidate already raising close to $600,000 for 2020, the GOP leadership saw this district as not worth the $5 million they spent in 2018. District 23 is now permanently blue.

Districts 17, 22, and 24 follow the pattern already seen in district 23. With massive numbers of legal and illegal migrants, the demographics of those districts has caused a gradual and undeniable shift from Republican to Democrat.

I wonder if there is an increase in resignations/retirements last few years or if this is par.

“Congressman Conaway is unique in that his district will likely remain red for some time”

Does this not trash this guy sown argument? Texas is on the precipice. We either stem the illegals now or it’s over. I say 95% of all wall funding should be sent to TX and AZ. F CA and NM is lost. Once Texas falls it truly is over.

RE: Yup... And Beto won there... Oops!

I won’t take Beto’s defeat in 2018 as a joke. HE LOST BY A SLIM MARGIN, against for me, one of the best Senators in the nation.

We might not be so fortunate the next time.

This tells me that Texas is changing... for the WORSE.

These guys are probably looking at their districts and seeing 30% more Hispanics living there over the past few years. They can read the writing on the wall.

Marchant was the only one who sided with the citizens and the rule of law.
The rest are Bush League Republicans hell bent on turning the USA in to North Mexico, good riddance.

We have to do more than stem the flow, we must remove as many illegal aliens already here as humanly possible.

Yes, Ted is one of the best. But he was sailing into tremendous headwinds in 2018.

First, many did NOT forgive and forget his antics at the convention.

Second, 2018 was a typical mid-term for the party in power. Every Republican had a hard time.

Third, Beto was a new and shiny toy that the voters of Texas just didn’t know yet. Run that election again today, after what Beto has said and done in his Presidential campaign and I have a hunch he ain’t coming close to winning.

N.C. 9 was a huge indicator for me as to where current voter enthusiasm lies. I also don’t think the people of Texas are going to take kindly to impeachment.

Maybe that close margin in the Texas Senate race was because of Cruz and not Texas.

Plus, November 2018 was a blue wave in many areas of the country for whatever reason....Fake Mueller investigation that many low info voters believed, the media hammering Trump with lies 24/7, whatever.

Blaming voters who were physically attacked by a leftist mob at Trump’s Chicago rally was a shit head move which is not going away here in Texas.

He rebranded himself at that moment.

Flores is 65. Marchant is 68. Conaway is 71.

I think these Congress critters no longer want to spend their retirement years fighting.

Hurd is 42. Olson is 56. Don't know if they're any good.

I don't believe people are resigning out of fear they are going to lose. I don't see much difference between resigning and losing. Either way, they are out of office. I live in Pete Olson's district 22. According to Wikipedia, in the 2016 election, Olson polled 181,864 votes (59.2 percent) to 123,670 (40.5 percent) for his Democratic opponent, Democrat Mark Gibson. That is a pretty comfortable margin of victory IMO.

There is no doubt that demographics will ultimately doom Texas and the country. But I don't think that is why he is resigning. He claims it is due to the health issues of his mother-in-law. My wife is in a Bible study class with his wife, and my wife says Mrs Olson has dropped out of that too.

Trump is the last Republican President. A lot of folks better get their head on straight about the near future.
