It was widely reported earlier this year that the new state budget imposes an additional one percent tax on restaurant meals bringing that total meals tax to 7.35%. What you may have missed is that the 7.35% tax will also be imposed on many ready to eat prepared foods at the supermarket that have never been taxed before.
It is simply a money grab, thats all it is, said Senate Minority Leader Sen. Len Fasano (R-North Haven).
Republicans say it was sold to the public as a simple one percent tax hike on restaurant meals.
But the list from the tax department shows dozens and dozens of prepared food items, purchased at the grocery store, that will now be subject to the tax. Like packages 8 ounces or less of spring salad mix, sliced vegetables, sliced watermelon, or potato salad.
Sen. Fasano adding, If you buy 5 or less rolls or donuts, you will be taxed 7.35%. If you buy 6, no tax.
Governor Lamont admits, he needed the money to balance his budget but sees this as a fairness issue adding, I think our restaurants have been at a real disadvantage because people could go to grocery stores and buy the same thing you can get at a restaurant tax free at the grocery store.
This long list from the state tax department on the items that will now be subject to the Meals Tax is considered an advisory opinion, which the Republicans say is likely to cause a great deal of confusion next month.
Deadhead Ned is working on saving the environment by striving senior citizens on a fixed income.
I'm sure they're ready. They're already charging us 10 cent for paper bags and plastic has been banned.
Governor Lamont admits — It’s all bout the BENJAMINS !!
So, by that logic, apartment building owners are at a disadvantage because people buy their own homes.
Taxi drivers are at a disadvantage because people have their own cars.
Restaurants are a luxury item, home cooking is the norm.
What's next, supermarkets are at a disadvantage because people have backyard vegetable gardens? Tax the person for growing their own lettuce, because the grocery store isn't getting the tax that was for the disadvantaged restaurant?

Sounds like a hit piece on Republicans... no state listed - nothing. Written in a style similar to a legitimate news story ... but obviously not... what gives?
Well duh, that's exactly what a tax is. Every tax.
Yah baby...more money to spend...
MineMineMineMineMineMineMine....
Effing Socialists put into place by brain dead voters.
He'll probably "fix" it by instituting a 7.75% CT sales tax across the board.
Connecticut (which used to be a wonderful state) SUCKS.
NO. They were completely caught off guard, from what I've been hearing in the local media.
This state is run like a freakin' banana republic.
The plastic bag ban is SO stupid. I see many more people now in the plastic trash bag aisles buying plastic bags to line their small wastebaskets. We all still use plastic bags for kitchen trash, etc. obviously.
I now use *extra* plastic at the grocery stores. Any food item that might leak or "sweat", I wrap in FREE produce department plastic bags. Why should I clean up the damn mess in my reusable bags??
Five miles north of me I can shop in Massachusetts and get all the plastic shopping bags I want. Just crazy.
Eff Connecticut!
Massachusetts isn't really "Taxachusetts" anymore. Connecticut now gets the "honor" as the most taxed state in New England, as far as I know. *Many* companies and jobs have moved from CT to MA. Massachusetts is actually booming, in some respects.
Hubby and I have done some research. If we moved just 5 miles north to MA, we would save thousands each year on property, car and other taxes there compared to The People's Republik of Connecticut.
I think the 'RATs in Connecticut are getting their insane ideas from CA and NY.
Oklahoma charges the same tax rate for food and drugs, as for anything else. Even crooked Illinois doesn’t do THAT. (Or at least they didn’t when I lived there).
Wow, surprising. I'll bet the property taxes in OK are far less than ours are though.
CT is proof of that.
We live in a little Oklahoma town of about 3500 people, in our 1000 square foot “fixer upper”. Our real estate taxes are $200 a YEAR. I would say that close to a third of the property here is rental property. The landlords who own them, refuse to vote for tax increases, and, believe it or not, only property owners are allowed to vote in local elections.
But, it’s quiet here, the crime rate is low, and consists mostly of drunks or druggies dealing with each other. 1 murder in the last 15 years, rape is rare (1-3 a year), as are robberies. Nearly everyone protects their homes with firearms, and everyone knows it. Burglary rate’s about 1%, other than that, most other thefts consist of shoplifting.
It may be boring, but the price is right, and we’re getting up there in years, so we don’t mind the quiet. We’re 20 miles from a small city, and 50 miles from a metropolitan area.
I used to be a Navy medical supply officer at the submarine base in Groton. I was also stationed up in Newport, RI earlier in my career. I loved New England, that’s for sure. Scenic beauty galore and the roads were certainly better than here in MI. But man, the cost of living was a bit steep, to say the least.
What’s that old saying? “You can’t get blood out of a turnip.” But they’ll keep squeezing and trying, I guess. ;-)
Yes, and the sad thing was if you bought actual prepared foods (i.e. sandwiches, grinders, etc) at a grocery store you still paid sales tax. He is just a puppet.
They were also caught off guard by the bag tax from what I read. Many POS and accounting systems had no ready made way to correctly apply the tax, so they had no time to re-code their systems. However, they can easily add a store only PLU to charge for paper bags and keep the money.
It doesn’t help Lamont and the Dems are ow fighting over what is exactly taxed and they are blaming DRS for “incorrectly” interpreting the law they passed.
