Uber will refuse to comply with a new bill passed in California Wednesday that says they must reclassify their drivers as employees rather than contractors, arguing that drivers arent core to its ride-share business model. Known as AB-5, the bill requires companies in the state - such as Lyft and Uber - to treat workers as employees by providing them with the full benefits and protections the designation necessitates. Under the motions terms, the title of employee must be issued to any worker the company exerts control over in terms of performance of their task, or if the role carried out by the worker is central to the employers regular business. But in a dramatic push-back, Ubers chief legal officer Tony West voiced confidence over drivers being able to maintain their independent status irrespective of the bill -insisting drivers are not central to the companys operations.

It figures.
Good reply to anyone who disputes their workers are somehow not employees. This company makes the bad old employers of the early 20th century look good.
How about any independent contractor that provides a service to you, like the guy who mows your lawn, paints your house, handymen, gutter cleaning, carpet cleaning...the list is endless. Are they all going to be unionized or become employees?
Didnt Obama push this B.S. too, saying franchise owners fell under the franchise parent as far as employees were concerned? Commies gota commie.;

Im guessing the taxi drivers, their unions, companies are behind this. I picked one of my daughters up at DFW yesterday and didnt see a single taxi cab. Just What appeared to be Uber and Lyft vehicles. Lots of big black Suburbans, Tahoes, etc.
>> arguing that drivers arent core to its ride-share business model.
Money is the core. rape and robbery is just a feature.
>>Not anytime soon for driverless cars being in mass use by Uber anyone else.
Kroger is using them and soon going without a co-pilot

Nuro vehicles have logged thousands of miles while mapping our southwest Houston neighborhoods and making grocery deliveries for Kroger.
There is a person in the vehicle, but by year’s end Nuro says that will change. The next generation of autonomous vehicles for Nuro scheduled to hit Houston roads is the bot called the R1. Nuro Product Operations Manager Sola Lawal tells us it’s lighter, slower and safer than today’s cars.
it’s the Grindr of hitchhiking.
“we’ll pair up two people who want to meet”
Farmers are not central to the operation of the Chicago Board of Trade, its just a market that enables sellers and buyers. Uber does the same thing.
And once that happens, they’ll be able to pay fewer driver employees.
I believe that the original idea was for a free & willing association of states.
“These United States”, i.e., these independent States who have chosen to unite to form a more perfect union...
That notion was laid to rest in 1865.
“A major flaw in the Founders plan for our government is not providing a way for two-thirds of the states to expel states that no longer act as liberty-loving Americans.”
Declare California a terrorist state.
Not sure what you mean. I work as a contractor. I don't need the government to force my clients to give me things I may not particularly want from them.

I’m an independent broker doing courier work and I relish my independence.
I get asked to do runs not commanded to do runs.
My relationship is as a business with another business.
Weird, I’ve used it 8 times in the last week already (cheaper than parking downtown) and every experience has been easy and pleasant
The only problems Ive had are higher rates during peak hours and a snowstorm. When the driver goes out of the way to save time and raise charges its easy to contact Uber and get an instant refund of the overcharge.
Unlike others, I often get drivers whove been doing it for 2 years or more. I usually tip a little. Who knows, maybe Im a better ranked customer sought out by better drivers, which in turn gives me a better experience.
From the article:
Should Governor Gavin Newsom sign the bill into law as expected, more than one million contractors across the state of California are set to be affected, including janitors, construction workers and beauty technicians.
Doctors, insurance agents, and real estate agents, were all made exempt from the bill after months of jostling between lawmakers.
California Uber Alles!
This definition would eliminate pretty much all independent contractors if applied to all commercial activity.
Uber has ignored the law and regulations from day one.... why would anyone expect them to obey new ones, when they never followed existing ones.
