Uber will refuse to comply with a new bill passed in California Wednesday that says they must reclassify their drivers as employees rather than contractors, arguing that drivers aren’t core to its ride-share business model. Known as AB-5, the bill requires companies in the state - such as Lyft and Uber - to treat workers as employees by providing them with the full benefits and protections the designation necessitates. Under the motion’s terms, the title of employee must be issued to any worker the company exerts control over in terms of performance of their task, or if the role carried out by the worker is central to the employer’s regular business. But in a dramatic push-back, Uber’s chief legal officer Tony West voiced confidence over drivers being able to maintain their independent status irrespective of the bill -insisting drivers are not central to the company’s operations.

insisting drivers are not central to the company’s operations.

Was Mr. West's nose growing when he said that?

Driverless cars are central to their operations, or soon will be.

Didn’t Obama push this B.S. too, saying franchise owners fell under the franchise parent as far as employees were concerned? Commies gota commie.

The bigger question is “Were the Mexifornian lawmakers fangs getting longer?”. Which we already know the answer.

Uber is one of those companies that looses money so they should just quit California. Make their customers holler and do the work convincing politicians.

California was pretty unanimous in their legislation. Rideshare workers are employees, Uber should be treating them as such, should be paying for their auto insurance and employee benefits, etc. I doubt California will be long alone in their move.

I use Uber, marvel that they've survived with the incredible turnover--everyone is always new. The company has skirted the whole contractor-vs.-employee relationship.

Idiot blue state doing what it does best......shutting down or running a business out of state.

Mr. West’s remarks themselves are dillusional but that is another issue.

Does Uber set their drivers hours, or do the drivers control when they participate in Uber or not?

I tried to use Uber once about 2 years ago. Downloaded the app, went through the process as instructions required. Went to actually use it and the app would not accept any debit or credit cards.

I had to just call a cab. I tried to figure out how to contact Uber for assistance later and found that the corporate has went out of their way to ensure customers have as difficult time as possible to get assistance. Screw them.

That is an old, outdated concept of employee vs. contractor, which Uber has abused.

Will this apply to the help? Will Nancy Pelosi now have to call her numerous maids and cooks along with her migrant labor on her vineyards full employees and give them full benefits?

I remember not too long ago when Uber was a car pool facilitation app/service and the amount you paid the driver was for gas/maintenance/insurance.

He is saying that Uber is a Digital Platform meet-up space that independent drivers and independent riders use to facilitate an agreed service. It’s much like Facebook and Twitter being digital platforms to share ideas and experiences.

A major flaw in the Founders’ plan for our government is not providing a way for two-thirds of the states to expel states that no longer act as liberty-loving Americans.
