Trump administration readies ban on flavored e-cigarettes amid outbreak of vaping-related deaths

The Trump administration is preparing to ban flavored e-cigarettes as federal health officials call for restrictions to combat an outbreak of a mysterious lung disease that has sickened hundreds and killed at least six people, U.S. health secretary Alex Azar told reporters Wednesday. The Food and Drug Administration is finalizing its guidance to remove e-cigarette flavors other than tobacco from the market because children are attracted to other flavors, Azar said, following a meeting at the Oval Office with President Donald Trump. It could take the FDA several weeks to develop the guidelines, he said. The administration will also take enforcement action if it finds e-cigarette makers are intentionally targeting children, Azar said.

After smoking for 30 years I was able to get off of cigarettes 2 years ago with e-cigs, no tar, no chemicals, no smell, no yellow film on everything in the house I have been SO HAPPY I feel so much better!!! Had the entire house painted, new drapes and window coverings, new flooring I use the tobacco pods with the pen nothing with juice you fill yourself, NOW they want to take that too!!! MANY were able to get off of cigarettes with e-cigs and I don’t give a damn what they say the e-cigs are NOT as bad for you as cigarettes!!! I really feel for this industry because as usual a few people decided to mix their own destructive juices and vape them NOW everyone must suffer!!! A FEW mentally ill people go off the rails with a gun and EVERYONE must suffer!!!

You know, I never once saw an ad for weed or had anybody flavor it or package it in bright colors for me to purchase.

But, it was much easier for me to get weed in 1977 at age 15 than it was to buy booze, and brother, I spent a lot of time as a young man trying to get either. For a while, I was even an emporium for one of those products myself...

If you truly believe that making something illegal will keep it out of the hands of kids, you are probably going to stand up and cheer when they ban AR-15’s and AK’s. After all, when you outlaw something, it just disappears, right?

I’m not a fan of vaping, but this sort of arbitrary power in the hands of the federal executive is worrisome no matter who occupies the White House.

I highly suggest that people like you, other vapers, and myself start writing both the FDA and President Trump.

This decision will end up hurting more than helping.

You guys have an interesting reaction. If we consider the baseline (libertarian) justification for government is to serve as collective effort against force or fraud, then where do historical purity laws fit?

Force is obvious: it's related to either common defense against a foreign enemy, or to prevent/control/punish criminal action committed by domestic outlaws.

But what about fraud? Where does one draw the line? We know the ancient Hebrews developed a number of purity laws, which were encompassed within religious proscriptions. Everyone knows about German beer purity laws, but few are aware they actually date back to circa 900 CE, not just the more familiar & current rules adopted during the 16th century.

How do you guys feel about child labor laws and compulsory education? The justification of course was to prevent the exploitation of youth, which could then be dumped on society after they were used, broken and useless for any further productive work.

So, let's talk flavored tobacco. How are proposed regulations & prohibitions any different from a wide range of products regulated to prevent/mitigate adulterants? Wouldn't these types of policies be similar to any other that gave range to *informed* adult decisions, while also barring the exploitation of additive qualities directed towards children?

Finally, once you're on this type of intellectual glide path, what about the cost to society to deal with either the mentally ill and/or criminal class? Both are net drain on society, but the downside to ignoring these populations are the types of public health crises developing in cities like LA what with all the filth and disease.

I had a similar experience. I wonder what the tobacco flavor is that they add cause it’s not tobbaco. In addition to me quitting many kids never start with cigs these days.

Yup, anything that is addictive needs to be looked at. They sell this stuff at gas stations where the kids go to get drinks. It’s heralded as not harmful in any way. It won’t take long to find out the truth.

She is not a socialist like all the dnc candidates and nowhere near as scary.
Besides we have enough republicans to keep her under control somewhat.
They just talked her out of the 45 cent gas tax she was planning to foist on us.

Watching their NFL team lose on Sunday caused more than six fans to die of heart attacks—guaranteed!

Ban the NFL!

Regulating humans is like herding cats.

We just scatter out of sight—and do what we want to do...

So often the previous disastrous interventions of government are used as the justification for further interventions - Government must bail out Fannie and Freddie - after government politically forced them into corrupt, crony-capitalist lending in the first place.

Re: E-cigs. We have both a large regulatory apparatus, and a government that lives off tobacco revenue - so that assures an eventual intervention. The vaping industry arose all by itself, invented products, regulated itself for over 2 decades Zero help, input, and minimal regulation from government.

What’s outrageous is that no one has offered any scientific fact behind banning “vaping.” Here in NY, Andrew Cuomo is ready to shut down the entire industry basis the media “outrage.” You can be fined more in NY for selling “vaping products” to a child, than you can be for selling them marijuana.

Child labor laws - these were solved by economic development and prosperity. Not government regulation. I’m sure Pakistan and Bangladesh have very strict laws about child labor too. Did labor unions really “give us the weekend” as they like to claim?

Compulsory education - 1/2 the kids in my city don’t graduate, and what exactly have they learned by for 10 years “in school” anyway? And yet we still pay $18K per student to keep the vast educational bureaucracy running. Is this really the only way for society?

You are asking the proper question - what is the role of government? But people also need to ask - at what level of government should things be managed?

The vitamin e has already been confirmed as the culprit. I have not had a cigarette in nine years, I vaped since I quit using a very low nicotine level. My lung capacity has improved immensely. I am no longer out of breath and I am thankful for vaping.

I’ll bet you’ll be as tickled as I will be when we’re forced to take up smoking regular cigarettes again after they outlaw ecigs.

Tickled to death.

And you just posted that it’s ok to kill kids whose lungs aren’t developed.

See, two can play your childish game.

The are not stopping it forever, just long enough to find out what is affecting the lungs of these kids. There is a teen in the hospital now needing a LUNG transplant and he hasn’t been vaping all that long.

No I will just start smoking marijauna......it is legal, which is the big joke in this entire debacle. The swamp doesn’t mind anesthetizing our youth with pot but put doctored pot in altered vape juice and it becomes a banned substance.

Other than that 5 colors suffices for most everything, except resistor color codes which expand the pallet to 10 colors. (OK, maybe we can add gold and silver for tolerance bands).

The non-binaries would see that as "oppressive" LOL

Why doesn’t the government do real studies or have they and already know the data is positive for vaping? All they can say is there isn’t enough information to determine the affects of vaping. Which is ridiculous because it has been around for years and years. How many cases of heart disease have been attributed to vaping, how about COPD, lung cancer? Has there been a reduction in these diseases BECAUSE of vaping?

Probably, (As lightman coyly said in post #97) because there’s no money involved in doing what you suggest -and what they SHOULD be doing instead.

Crony capitalism at it’s finest.
