Census: Number of people without insurance jumped in 2018 for first time since 2009

The number of people without health insurance jumped by 2 million from 2017 to a total of 27.5 million in 2018, according to census data release Tuesday.

It’s the first time the census survey reported an increase in the number of people without insurance since 2009, before ObamaCare took effect and vastly expanded coverage.

The total uninsured rate increased to 8.5 percent in 2018 from 7.9 percent in 2017.

Census officials said the increase was mostly driven by a drop in the number of people, including kids, covered by public programs like Medicaid.

The number of children without insurance also increased from 2017 to 2018 by 0.6 percent.

Kids living in the South were more likely to be uninsured than children living in other parts of the U.S.

Between 2017 and 2018, the uninsured rate for children living in the south increased by 1.2 percentage points to 7.7 percent

Hispanic children were more likely to not have insurance.

How is this possible?

Democrats assured us ObamaCare would mean more people would have health care coverage.

"Kids living in the South were more likely to be uninsured than children living in other parts of the U.S."

"In the south" should be translated to higher minority populations. With a few exceptions of big urban areas in the northeast and west coast, the south pretty much has most of the minorities.

Up north when whites speak of minorities they speak of urban areas almost like the two terms are synonymous. Here in the south we have minorities living in suburbs and on farms, often in the same neighborhoods and not in the self-segregated patchwork of neighborhoods you see more frequently up north.

“That’s not a bug, that’s a feature!”

ObamaCare was meant to break the healthcare system to the point that people would accept Single Payer.

The Obamacare plans are unaffordable to many.
Trump has staved off the penalties, so they are opting out.

Health insurance does not make people any healthier. Insurance protects your assets not your health. My wife and I use Christian Healthcare Ministries. We do not have health insurance. Technically we have no health insurance and have not for several years.

Good.

The fewer people with health insurance, the better it is for the health care market.

Health care services will be faster for those who are insured and health care services will be better for those of us who have insurance.

"Because the mandate requiring ins[urance] was eliminated"

May as well close the thread, this is most of the reason, little else useful to be said.

So, screw those without health insurance, is that what you’re saying? If so, wow. And pity for you really.

No, you always have the option to buy health insurance or you can pay as you go for health care.

Health insurance helps to drive up costs, just as medicare and such does as well. If it was all cash, prices would be much lower. But, that is only one of many things that helps to keep ‘health care’ expensive.

Yes, there should be only private health insurance for those that pay and no Medicare, no Medicaid, and no public funding of medical care.

Sure. The same has happened to college. One can overlay the rising costs of college and health care together with the outflow of .gov spending to both resources. Crazy.

Because the mandate requiring ins was eliminated.

That is one pesky detail that has seemed to escape all the pundit's attention.

Also, with the elimination of the mandate, the people that are healthiest tend to not buy health insurance coverage...Just like before the obummercare mandate.

I personally know of two people at my workplace who don’t have health insurance. They say they can’t afford it (yet manage to buy other things), then complain because they have to empty their bank accounts to pay doctor bills. For some reason, to them, it makes more sense to try and pay a $10,000 hospital bill as opposed to one much lower, with a sizeable portion paid by insurance. Go figure.
I’d much rather pay $40 for an office visit than $150.But, then again, that’s just me.
