The media is nuts. Nice try...ahs
They have my sympathy. Id be willing to fast track Hong Kongers for political asylum. As for getting involved directly either politically or militarily - sorry, no.
I have not been following this much, but I am strangely suspicious of all the American flag waving. It may actually be what it seems; a genuine appeal for support, but I just keep wondering if there isn’t more to this behind the curtains.
The UN....is the proper path...not the USA.
Hong Kongers for political asylum?? That’s nuts.
RE: The UN....is the proper path...not the USA.
China is a PERMANENT member of the UN Security Council.
RE: I am strangely suspicious of all the American flag waving.
Some possibilities:
1) The Chicoms have infiltrated the protests and is using this American flag waving to tell its citizens that the USA ( through the CIA and the NED ) is interfering in China’s internal affairs. This ties up nicely with the narrative that America is trying to destroy China via isolating her comapnies ( e.g. Huawei ) and the trade wars.
2) The People of Hong Kong are telling the world that they DO NOT CONFORM to the Chicom way of governance and that they value Western Style Democracy more than totalitarianism. It is a plea for Western pressure and help.
TAKE YOUR PICK. I’ve seen people argue either way depending on who you support.
From the article you linked to:
(EXCERPT)
Pansy Ho and Annie Wu will tell UN Human Rights Council that small group of radical protesters do not represent views of all 7.5 million Hongkongers

If so, then the protests has its good and bad elements. There are probably radicals in the group bent on fomenting anarchy.
However, this still does not nullify the fact that the VAST MAJORITY of Hong Kong people are on the side of the Protesters and their demands.
The solution would be for Carrie Lam and her cohorts to sit down and talk to the Protest leaders. That she refuses to do so is her fault ( and if her masters in Beijing tell her not to, then it’s the fault of Xi and his cohorts ).
I can certainly find a place to help out a couple of them.
Does the uk expect the USA to enforce contract?
US should support a Singapore style outcome as the communists have breached the agreement.
Vehicle should be the UN. If the UN is good for anything it’s this. The treaty to “ return” Hong Kong is an international treaty recorded with the UN. Treaty has been breached.
UN Charter and position on colonial territories is that colonial holdings have the right of self determination, which Hong Kong was never given.
Exactly
Why would it be nuts to fast track Hong Kongers for political asylum? There are only about 6 million of them. Only a fraction would seek political asylum in the US. On the whole they tend to be educated and productive people who actually value freedom. Those are the kind of immigrants any country should want.
We should not get involved at all.
Where is the UK in all of this?
What is their responsibility if the treaty agreement they signed, is not followed?
The Trump CIA is presently as involved in Hong Kong as it will ever be.
The camel’s back has been broken and as jobs dry up, the demonstrations will spread into adjacent Pearl River Delta streets
They are too busy helping the Bahamians. Oh, wait...
