“If the guy was approaching the cops,...”

You’re right about the replay. In the third paragraph of the thread, it stated he got out of the car but it didn’t say anything about his moving away from it and approaching the officers. Just that he got out of the car and that he had the knife and they ordered him to drop it. If he did approach one or more of the officers, yes, he’s a threat. But it only said he got out of the car and was given the order right before they opened fire with nothing to add to the mix. If that’s the case, they shot someone just standing there with a knife. No threat. Misuse of lethal.

Yes, they probably did save the taxpayers money for housing and feeding him for a while. But nothing he did required an execution. And if the article word for word is correct, in the order it stated it, and depending on some family giving a $hit, there may some dime to pay and some wrongful death cases. And those generally occur after criminal actions.

Do you know how fast someone with a knife can get to you? Are you a conceal carry holder because they teach you these stats.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The cops could sit back in their cars and lock the doors.
I live one suburb away from where this happened and it is nothing new for the cops to shoot people when they weren’t really in danger.
But if the suspect was not a threat
He became a threat when he decided to flee from the police. He became a threat to every vehicle and pedestrian in the vicinity of each red light he ran.
Anyone facing you with a weapon is a threat to you......
Unless the guy with the knife can prove he was filleting fish before he got out of the car with knife in hand, he deserved to be shot.
Put me on the jury and the officer is innocent.....
This reminds me of a Youtube video I watched recently of a gay man that jumped from a Cruise Ship balcony after being accused of photographing kids. The man’s husband claimed the crew was throwing homophobic slurs at him and that a fight occurred where he was pushed over the rail of the room balcony. The crew claimed the man was being a drama queen and took things too far. The video shows he was either forced to let go of his grip of the life boat he was clinging from or he refused help and was avoiding the helping hand. It was ruled a suicide.
“He became a threat when he decided to flee from the police.”
But when the fleeing stopped, the threat did to. It’s the law. According to VOX, “ Legally, what most matters in these shootings is whether police officers reasonably believed that their or others’ lives were in danger....” When the car stopped, he was no longer a threat to anyone.And unless he starts at someone or charges the police with drawn weapons or attempts to throw the knife, he is not a threat. And that’s all he had.
” It was ruled a suicide.”
Interesting the predominant thought process on the ship was he leaped over the rail of his state room balcony, but he had to have caught himself on the life boat on the way down as cruise ships don’t have lifeboats attached to the stateroom balcony railings. They are even on a separate deck. Either that or he landed on one by accident and then went the rest of the way by choice or assistance.
This must not have been one of the newer ships as the life boats are not set on the railings any more but are pushed up to the bulkhead where they can be moved out in to position.
Many of the cruise ships ar foreign registry and maritime law is a little different than the civil laws we know, or even the country of registration knows. Strange differences with the captain of the vessel being a monarch of the ship.
You know what an asinine argument this is? We’re not Europe where the weenies run away if confronted by a knife wielder. So you think they should just sit in their car until the guy gets tired of holding the knife? Then what’s the plan? He wanted to be shot by police so either way he’s going to put himself or others in harms way to do it.
If you think it’s ok for the cops to kill anyone that scares them then I guess you have a right to your opinion and I’ll leave it at that
Every situation is different, what happens is a guy leads them on a short chase, doesn’t stop for lights... this is a red flag for any officer. At that point statistics show you are likely dealing with someone who has felony warrants or is a possibly dangerous person.
It’s just how the training is - same for every dept. in the country. You have a split second to make a decision when presented with a weapon. It’s always easy to Monday morning QB it.
