Pessimism sometimes pervades this board a little.
Hong Kong belongs to China. The U.S. has no business meddling in their politics, any more than Mexico has any business telling the U.S. how to manage our affairs.
Comparing the situations in the western USSR and Hong Kong are comparing apples and oranges. US can provide a tipping point, but the heavy lifting must be done by the inhabitants over time. This revolution is not ripe yet.

IMO, Trump has a dream of destroying the CCP.
If the CCP gives in to Trump’s trade demands they will eventually fall.
If they do not deal honourably with Trump and lose US trade then they fall.
Since Trump will not kowtow to the CCP they have only one option to remain in power and it is a frightening option...you know what I am alluding to here :-/
