US lifts ban on old-style light bulbs
BBC News ^

Posted on 09/07/2019 5:00:16 PM PDT by ameribbean expat

The US is scrapping a ban on energy-inefficient light bulbs which was due to come in at the beginning of 2020. The rule would have prohibited the sale of bulbs that do not reach a standard of efficiency, and could have seen an end to incandescent bulbs. Many countries have phased out older bulbs because they waste energy. But the US energy department said banning incandescent bulbs would be bad for consumers because of the higher cost of more efficient bulbs. The Department of Energy said it had withdrawn the ban because it was a misinterpretation of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act. Specifically, the law stipulated that restrictions on bulbs could only be implemented when it was economically justified , Shaylyn Hynes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy, told the New York Times. Activists say the government has come under pressure from manufacturers. " It makes zero sense to eliminate energy-saving light bulb standards that will save households money on electricity bills and cut climate change emissions," Appliance Standards Awareness Project executive director Andrew deLaski told the Washington Post. "Instead, the Trump administration is siding with manufacturers that want to keep selling outdated, energy-wasting light bulbs."

“Why do I keep having to replace these new-style bulbs that claim to have a ten-year life span?”

BS. I started converting three years ago and finished the whole house about 8 months ago. I have not had to replace any of the LEDs.

“And then there’s the mercury cleanup that will occur in the future. You don’t really think folks are taking them to a special center, do you?”

Do your homework and see you are so very wrong.

Somewhere along the line you took the wrong path to knowledge.

I understand what you’re saying, but I’ve never been good with tools. I’m going to need a new shower head soon, and I would be more interested in finding someone willing to modify it for me.

Thanks for the tip, though. I had a plumber who replaced a water heater for me recently, and I think I might be able to persuade him to furnish and modify a replacement showerhead. Maybe not. I suspect most plumbers would not want to to take the risk.

Any more suggestions on how to find someone to do it for me would be greatly appreciated.

Your writing was clear but it was still false.

I have enough to last a few years, too!

I've conserved a lot of energy since the change. To conserve my 100-watters, I never have more than one light on in the house at a time. At night, I walk around the house with a flashlight, rather than turn lights on and off.

I recently replaced three shower heads. Ten minute job.

Took ten seconds to remove the little plastic flow restrictor.

LED bulbs are great. But, put one on your garage door opener and it’ll never go out. There’s a current sensor in that circuit.

Take your shower head apart, find your FRiendly neigbor that has tools and ask him to drill out the ball to a larger bore.

Bring beer with you.

I switched to KEDs and have conserved a lot of energy.

Nightlights and motion-activated lights make it very convenient.

I dont have to lug a flashlight around since LEDs use such little energy.

Totally agree. This is a huge nothing burger in reality...we’ve already scaled up mass production of alternatives with years of improvements. The old equipment is probably gone and it’d cost the manufacturers more to go back to them than just improve what they have with current products.

The other aspect is that many consumers have already upgraded and they last longer. There’s probably very little reason for any manufacturer to even bother going back.

PDJT did this to torment the leftist idiots.

That, I might be able to do. Do you happen to know the make and model of the heads? Others have suggested I drill out a ball. I was thinking they meant metal balls, but maybe they’re plastic.

Look for the ones you can "modify". The Speakman S-2252, and the Aqua Elegante have a removable flow restrictor.

They were rain shower heads bought at Lowes. Google shower head flow restrictors for more info.
