There are trillions upon trillions of stars and worlds in our Universe. Faced with such large numbers, it's tempting to conclude that there must surely be other life out there, somewhere. But is this right? Could the probability of life beginning be a number so small that we are alone? A video essay by Professor David Kipping.
I could read it in a small fraction of the time it would take to watch the video.
That’s true for all videos. And the poster let you know (”via YouTube”) right off the bat. Yet you take the time to click and leave a comment...???
Scary thought,
Being alone.
But it would
Make us very
Special.
Heh
I’m alone and I’m married.
Have a
Double, FRiend.
It’s Friday night!
I was married once and
it was worst than being
alone at times.
If we are alone, that should have a momentous impact on the way we treat each other in the lines that we are willing to cross in our disagreements.
If we are not alone, that should have a momentous impact on the way we treat each other in the wind that we are willing to cross in our disagreements.
Might as well be alone, just as some island and isolated people are here on earth.
Having read sci-fi for decades, I do not like the idea, but have come to accept it.
I didn’t watch the presentation but I’m sure we are alone.
Regardless of the possibility of many earthlike planets in the universe, the probability of some life form out there achieving consciousness is pretty much nil.
Depends on what the definition of ‘life’ is, I reckun .. and how many more dimensions exist. What’s it up to these days.. 11?
“Given the size of the universe and limitations on potential travel.... Might as well be alone, just as some island and isolated people are here on earth.

Well said. I have said as much many times. I don’t think we will ever know whether there is life outside our galaxy. Sure we could send probes but the distance to the NEAREST real galaxy like ours is 2.5 million light years. Thus I don’t think we will ever know much about other billions of galaxies nor huge sections of the Milky Way for that matter.
The distances are just too great.
Actually I think that the universe is full of intelligent life. Its just that they see how screwed up we are and do not want to have anything to do with the human race. They probably have some sort of force field blocking out what is really going on in the universe. They have the equivalent of the internet but keep us out of it. To them we are similar to what we think of as pets. Welll maybe more like low level amoebas because some pets actually serve a purpose.
Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying. - Arthur C. Clarke
Fascinating, indeed. Thanks for posting.
If we aren’t alone we’re certainly the only ones who need salvation.
