Trump to Get Two More Judges On Court That Oversees Crucial Civil Rights Cases

Within a matter of months, almost half of the judges on the powerful 11th circuit court of appeals will have been appointed by President Trump. On Thursday, Judge Stanley Marcus, a Clinton appointee, announced he will take senior status on the federal appeals court in Atlanta. Marcus’s decision, first reported by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, comes one month after another jurist on the same court, Judge Gerald Tjoflat, announced he would become a senior judge with a reduced case load.

The 11th Circuit covers Alabama, Georgia and Florida, and because of the significant numbers of African Americans in all three states, the circuit sees a lot of civil rights cases. A high number of death penalty cases, voting rights cases, and Title IX sexual harassment cases come through the court as well. Lilly Ledbetter’s pay discrimination suit was brought in that circuit, as was Martha Sandoval’s famous lawsuit alleging discrimination on the basis of national origin.

I don’t see any reason why that court is more important for civil rights cases.

And if it were, so what? Trump nominees aren’t the ones trying to violate peoples civil rights.

I really would love it if Trump replaced another SCOTUS judge, perhaps replace even two recognized liberal SCOTUS judges.

I’ll buy stock in Jiffy pop popcorn.

The 11th Circuit region has lots of troublesome civil rights antagonists, like the SPLC, who use barratry to get their way.

The never-ending angst and turmoil over judicial appointments over the past few generations points toward a horrid fact: the judiciary is just another political branch. This can’t go on forever in a republic. Something has to give.

No I read it. The explanation was not persuasive. Minorities Live in all jurisdictions and the fact some major cases enter through that court doesn’t mean it gets more civil rights cases than others.

I would expect the DC Circuit to be far more important in this regard. This is a Yahoo alarmist article.

Hey, you are free to believe what you want, but the article actually lists important cases and you offer, “I expect” and “I think”.

Are you an attorney or legal expert? Lists important cases? Important cases are brought in every jurisdiction. The article can say whatever it wants. I happen to know what I’m talking about. Unless you wrote the article I suggest your devotion to the conclusion of a Yahoo news article is misplaced.

Let me be more precise. I KNOW the DC circuit is far more important with regard to civil rights laws and cases. The article is largely nonsense. But then it’s a Yahoo which is worse than msnbc.

Your knowledge is superficial and conjecture and since you apparently are obsessing on a minor throwaway article in which you feel a need to let me know that you really are informed, I will respond.

We all know the DC Court of Appeals is considered the most important appeals court - that is well established not only for the cases, but many SC justices come from this court. This is nothing new.

We know your beloved DC Court is the one to hear cases involving issues concerning the different branches of government and most anything to do with agency rules, etc.

However, civil rights cases can be heard in any appeals court. So it stands to reason, that a state with almost a third of its residents are black (GA), or a quarter (AL) or upper teens (FL) will hear a significant number of these cases than let's just say Idaho, or Montana or Michigan or Maine or Pennsylvania - states with black population below the national average.

It is also true that the SC hears more cases from the 11th circuit than from DC. Multiple reasons may apply as to why. I could go on, but I won't.

Hahaha yeah you brilliantly figured out there are less blacks in places like Wyoming. But compared to Hispanics in California? Blacks in Chicago or Philadelphia? Minorities in NY?

The article is just a Yahoo attempt to exaggerate the importance of blacks in Georgia being affected by Trump court picks. But that circuit could disappear tomorrow and civil rights cases would be alive and well in America.

Really not a big deal, but what’s your devotion to this Yahoo article? Do you not know Yahoo “news” is left wing sewage?
