The Dell Li-Ion batt pack laptops I’m familiar with that use battery supervisory circuity in the batt pack won’t do diddly to the batt pack unless the pack reports as ‘healthy’ to the laptop. If one of the cells is dead, the pack won’t take a charge from that point forward.Yep. Exactly what I was describing. The pack protects itself.

If . . . and this is a huge "If" - the surviving crew showed symptoms of HF exposure in 12 - 24 hours after the fire - it would explain why now there are a couple official sources talking about battery chargers today.
As well, on day 1 of the disaster the CG reported that the 4 deceased passengers pulled from the water showed physical trauma consistent with drowning. HF over exposure mimics drowning in that there is severe pulmonary edema (basically drowning in your own lung fluids) if you've inhaled a lot of it. That's one way it kills you. A lot of speculation, I know
