Tory Prime Minister Boris Johnson has, to his credit, seized the initiative in the battle over whether Britain will truly exit the EU, and on what terms.
But no one can know how this high-stakes gamble will turn out. Johnson just lost his slender parliamentary majority, and the prospect of a new election still looms.
If things break the wrong way, the winner could be opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, a throwback leftist redolent of the bad old days of Britains self-imposed stagnation.

Labour will lose a lot of seats in the coming election. Many Labour constituencies in the north of England and Wales voted for Brexit. The Brexit party should gain a few seats at their expense. The Conservatives will lose a fair few seats in Scotland but gain some in other parts of the UK. The Liberal Democrats will make signficant gains.
It will be a close battle between the pro-Brexit parties and the remainers. I hope that good prevails and the EU sinks into oblivion. The media has been doing all it can to scare people into the remain camp. It would be naive to downplay their effect on the minds of the population.
