It’s Lights Out for Obama-Era Bulb Ban That Would Have Curbed Consumer Choice
The Daily Signal ^ | September 05, 2019 | Nicolas Loris

The Department of Energy announced this week that it’s withdrawing the Obama administration’s energy-rationing mandate for certain lightbulbs.

Opponents criticized the rule change, arguing that the move would be bad for consumers and the climate. The reality, however, is that families and businesses will be better off, and the change will have a negligible impact on the environment.

The Energy Department’s decision to withdraw energy-efficiency standards for candle-shaped, globe-shaped, three-way and reflector lightbulbs is a victory for consumer choice.

Whether it’s buying a lightbulb or a new car, families have different preferences and needs. They consider the various trade-offs in products and face different budget constraints.

When Washington forces energy-rationing mandates on consumers, the federal government takes those choices away or at the very least overrides their preferences.

Critics of the Department of Energy’s action argue that continuing to use energy-inefficient lights will cost households $100 annually in higher energy costs.

But here’s the good news: There’s no mandate forcing families or businesses to use inefficient lighting. Consumers can voluntarily replace inefficient bulbs with more efficient ones if they so choose.

The practices of being resourceful and saving money are intuitive, which means that the economy does not need mandates or rebate programs to nudge families into making decisions the government thinks are best for consumers.

In fact, many families and businesses are switching over to LED bulbs because of the cost savings.

According to the National Manufacturing Electric Association, “The general service LED bulb now accounts for approximately 70 percent of the shipments in the general service lamp category.

Well, I don’t use a ‘kerosene heater’, and never have done.

(And I make distinctions between things, and don’t lump everything together.)

I like incandescent light bulbs.

I can still buy them online - but they aren’t of the quality or as easy to obtain as the old ones were. And I don’t like ‘government’ taking the choice away from me.

“About 10 percent of our LED lights fail”

100% of my incandescent light bulbs failed, not counting the ones I replaced with LEDs.

Actually I bought cases of 100 watt bulbs before the ban, stored them 10 plus years, and now use LEDs by choice. Oh well . . .

I’ve got mostly LEDs and I’m extremely happy about this! I’ve got some decorative light fixtures that need specialty bulbs. Occasionally you do want that extra heat from the bulbs in winter. A ll’ ol’ regular bulb is sometimes all you need on a cold day in Florida.

Definitely on the toilets. We’ve got one low flush—and we try not to use it, because you need two flushes, sometimes. If they really wanted to make toilets efficient, they’d put a dial/flush button that had flush levels: number one, number two and...”royal flush”.

Question is...

Why was Obama allowed to dictate to consumers and businesses? Their choices of type of light bulbs is a decision that nobody in government should be able to make for consumers or businesses.

Here we are years later rejoicing about the Obama era regulation being discarded, but in reality, it should never have been allowed to begin with.

Most people were left in the dark about why they had to switch over to LEDs. Should never be allowed to happen again, with anything.

“I had one of the corkscrew lights pop in the upstairs bathroom, showering my laundry basket with “powder”.
I didn’t know any better so I just rewashed the clothes and dried them, which blew the mercury dust everywhere upstairs.
Shortly after, I was diagnosed with “mercury poisoning”.
Took months to get my levels back to a safe range.”

Most of the mercury would have gone down the drain with the was water.

Do you really vent your dryer to the inside? I doubt it.

I see no way you were ‘poisoned’.

I’m going to be able to buy a regular light bulb again???? Thank God! I find it very difficult to see, read, sew, do art or carpentry, because the obama lights cast weird shadows and don’t show true colors. Its hard to tell black from dark blue for example. Besides, some of the obama lights are bad for people’s health. They shouldn’t spend more than 4 hours in the room with some led bulbs.

Regular light bulbs can’t hit the shelf soon enough for me.

I think our heater came on two times last year. I only have to wash my long jeans once each spring.

Yes, a thousand times. The 1.6-gallon flush toilets suck.

In California we're stuck with 1.28-gallon Obama toilets. I call it an Obama toilet because the turds don't easily go away.

I felt blessed that I could still find normal 3 way 50/100/150 bulbs.

Had to go to Home Depot and a local grocery store to get them but I’ve been using them even after the “ban”.

Not my experience. Before incandescent manufacturing moved out of the USA to China, we had good experience with incandescents. I grew up in SF, and back in the 1970s I pulled some bulbs from the family home that were labeled "Marconi-Edison" - most likely pre-dated the 1906 earthquake in our old home and were still functioning, that's over 70 years of use and still working. Like others, recently we stockpiled incandescents during the switch to CFL's (which we hate and don't use). Our experience is that the USA built bulbs last long, but not the ones made in China.

“I know you stalk me on FR.
Do you not feel that I’ve got enough misery right now, or are you enjoying my suffering so much that you simply cannot resist adding more to it?”

I have no idea what you are referring to.

Almost all the light bulbs in our house and garage are LED’s. Same with the outside lights. This includes our microwave oven and my wife really likes the replacement LED bulbs.
