Life in Britain is pretty great right now. Its the loveliest time of year: The rankness of high summer has passed, but the hedgerows remain thick and green, flecked with the first hints of autumn color. We are gripped by one of the most dramatic Ashes series ever: our regular cricket clash with Australia. Employment is at record levels. The deficit has finally been eliminated. The governing Conservative Party is 10 points ahead in the opinion polls.
I feel I have to lay these things out for overseas audiences, because a casual glance at the headlines might give you the impression that the United Kingdom is in the throes of some terrible crisis. The New York Times and the Washington Post, in particular, now run hilarious articles on an almost daily basis about how dreadful everything suddenly is because of Brexit.
Yes, there is a crisis in Parliament, but, outside Westminster, things are ticking along very nicely. In the three years since the referendum, Britain has attracted more foreign investment than any country in the world except China. Our stock exchange is surging. There are more EU nationals working in the U.K. than ever, belying the NYTs idiotic claims of a faltering economy, let alone rising xenophobia.
What of the shenanigans at Westminster? Well, one thing that I can state definitively is that they are not a Brexit crisis." Brexit, as you must have noticed, has not happened. What we are seeing is the opposite of a Brexit crisis, an un-Brexit crisis," a crisis caused by the refusal of MPs to do what they promised to do when they last stood for election.
As I write, the Opposition parties are seeking to overturn the referendum result. They dont exactly phrase it like that, of course. Instead, they say that they dont want to leave without a deal. But they know perfectly well that, if you rule out a no-deal Brexit," you rule out Brexit itself. If "no-deal" is off the table, then all Brussels has to do to keep Britain in the EU is continue to offer intolerable terms.
On Wednesday afternoon, MPs passed a motion obliging the government to seek as many extensions as the EU wanted. Boris Johnson, the prime minister, responded by calling for a general election. Whereupon Labour, which has been demanding an immediate poll for two years, suddenly went cold on the idea. Under legislation passed in 2010, two thirds of MPs must agree to an early dissolution of Parliament. On Wednesday evening, Labour and the other opposition parties, looking at the opinion polls, voted against such a dissolution.
Yes, you read that correctly. The parties that have spent the past month accusing Johnson of mounting some sort of coup just voted to prevent him from subjecting his tenure to a national vote.
The House of Commons has thus put itself in a ridiculous position. Pro-EU MPs have voted to keep in office a government they have calculatedly undermined. They have done so for the sole purpose of overturning a referendum result which they had previously promised to uphold. That, my friends, is our political crisis in a nutshell.
Now the good news. Voters are not idiots. They can see what is going on. Sooner or later, probably sooner, there will have to be a general election. The Conservatives have, in effect, deselected 21 of their MPs, including several former ministers, for voting with Labour to prevent Brexit. Although that purge has horrified commentators, most of whom are in awe of the Europhile grandees, it is a necessary prelude to an election campaign that will turn on Brexit. The Tories could hardly fight an election promising to leave the EU while several of their candidates refused to accept that policy. Though the pundits are fainting like affronted matrons, voters appreciate Boris Johnsons strength of purpose.
In the meantime, the loss of those 21 votes has deprived the government of its majority, making an election before the end of the year almost inevitable.
No one can say how it will turn out, obviously, though the betting markets and the money markets are both predicting a Conservative majority. Such a majority would at last allow Britain to square up to the EU without being undermined.
When British MPs defy public opinion, they often quote Edmund Burkes 1774 speech to the voters of Bristol, in which he explained that he was their representative, not their delegate. The MPs rarely go on to mention that Bristol booted Burke out at the next election.
My guess is that something similar will happen when polling day comes. Even many remain voters balk at the idea of dragging the argument out any further. Im going to stick my neck out here: Boris is going to win.
Boris Johnson has goaded the Remainers into flipping the bird to the voters. It will not end well for them.
The Labour Party didn’t even vote for the Election Bill thing ,they did nothing but pick their butts
It is my strong opinion that the Left is in deep trouble all over the world and the reason in a word (ok two words) is Donald Trump.
If he has accomplished nothing else (and of course he has accomplish very much) he has ripped the facade off hypocrisy and lies promulgated incessantly on the citizens.
While before DJT their insidious game was one of incrementalism, instituting changes slowly and with great deceit they have now been forced to rush full speed ahead in a crazed attempt to get in place their entire America hating agenda.
Why is this? Simple. This president has made America see the truth behind their lies and he has also fearlessly taken on the Lefts water carrying best friends in the media and has done so not just fearlessly but with great gusto as I see it. Not only does this man not shrink from a fight, he instead relishes the fight and stands toe to toe with the enemy and uses their hatred of him as a source of great energy.
If you have not read his books I encourage you to do so. All he is and all his actions today were forecast in those books. This man is among the most competitive and determined I have yet witnessed and we are immensely fortunate to have him as our leader at exactly the right time in our history.
This Presidents success can be judged by the hatred and fear emanating from the Left. As his accomplishments accumulate so does the insane hatred for him by those who hate all this man stands for. But the thing which drives the Left most insane is that Donald J Trump, President not only does not fear them, he laughs at them and nothing enrages a Liberal more than being laughed at and mocked.
+1.
“Voters are not idiots. “
They are here.
Only if the cabal of New York Bankers, Deep State illuminati and Abe Lincoln direct it.
Good summary of the reality versus the mediots’s fantasies.
I think PDJT has accelerated the phenomenon but Brexit was the first clear signal something was happening. Brexit was a response to the globalists, which the Democrats here are well aligned with, along with the media, it’s all been exposed.
The doubling, tripling down on their idiocy is required to save face - but it’s just gone so far out there that the average person just sees it for what it is and they can’t hide it.
What I find astonishing is that there’s STILL those that believe the media and leftist lies. It’s as though the movie “The Matrix” is real after all - except we all exist in the same space, some are awake and others just continue to walk around unable to see through the ocean of lies that surround them. They don’t live in the same “reality” - they’re living one that isn’t really real at all. Amazing.
I thought you might get a kick out of my comment. :)
So what about Brexit? Do they have a right or not?
Oh sure. Everything is fine in Britain. Pushing exit off is not a problem.
What stupid commentary. Don’t do anything to change the evil of your government.
Go back to sleep, all is well.
“I wonder when the Union is going to send a fleet of warships to pressure them into remaining in the Union?”
You have waited too long to leave when you hear the man tell you:

“What I find astonishing is that theres STILL those that believe the media and leftist lies.”
Astonishing to those who believe as do you and I, but those you speak of have gone their entire lives being told what to think and why it’s good to be dependent. Suddenly they are faced with the reality that all they have been taught is based on a lie and it is simply to painful to accept.
They are life’s losers and will always be blaming others for their failures.

Does the populace want liberals that pretend to be conservatives (UKs conservative party) or the real ones (labour)?
There is one segment he is not able to penetrate very well - millennials. The ones on facebook that seem to hate him the most. (Not to mention that tend to be supporters or members of ANTIFA)
Since President Trump will not be President for the next thousand years, I'd say that the 'Left is in trouble' is a little over blown.
This is bad, stupid fixed term parliament act means Johnson can’t unilaterally dissolve Parliament. Thanks Nick Clegg! So he’s still PM now but neutered by traitors, including his own damn BROTHER who just resigned from Parliament cause he can’t decide whether he loves the EU more than he loves his brother.
There will be an election at some point but if occurs after a Brexit delay the stupid Brexit party will take a lot of votes from Johnson.
