Freeport, Grand Bahama (CNN)Across the northern Bahamas, what used to be stunning islands are now scenes of widespread destruction. Hurricane Dorian pulverized the islands for two days, hurling catastrophic winds and relentless rain. It was the strongest storm ever to make landfall in the country.
Now, the only airport on the island of Grand Bahama has been ripped apart by Dorian. "After two days of trying, we're finally able to get into the Freeport airport," CNN's Patrick Oppmann said from the scene Wednesday.
"It's gone. ... The level of devastation is actually breathtaking. There are no walls left at the airport. The ceiling has come crashing."
The airport's obliteration deals a devastating blow for residents who desperately need medical evacuations or emergency aid. "The runway field is now a debris field," Oppmann said. "I don't think even a helicopter could land there." Now that Dorian's vicious clouds are slowly crawling up the southeast US coast, Bahamians are finally seeing sunlight again. "Nothing compares to what we went through the past two days," survivor Michael Hynes said. "Almost 48 hours now with nonstop carnage."
At least seven people, including an 8-year-old boy, were killed. Authorities say that number will almost surely rise.

“Wimp. Ive been to the Philippines the past 10 years and they get hit an average of 5 typhoons a year where people die, properties destroyed and they re-build like it was nothing. It is what it is. Most probably Sunshine here is used to sun, “
How many of those have 200+ mph winds and basically sit for two days?
Don’t be silly. That would mean supplies could be dropped into neighborhoods and not deposited in one spot so we can have another Puerto Rico where supplies are held by corrupt leaders.
Much better if England and the Commonwealth airdropped supplies.
The Bahamas are part of the Commonwealth of England.
I wonder what assistance Great Britain will offer.
Prayers up for the people and country.
The Bahamas joined the Commonwealth on July 10, 1973.
The president has already sent one of our heavy lift choppers.
The Clinton Foundation is going to make another fortune over this deal.
Just slap a Boeing sticker on it and the FAA will probably certify it as ready to fly.../s

“It was the strongest storm ever to make landfall in the country.”
Fact check; not true. It is the strongest storm in recorded history to hit the Bahamas. Accurate weather records go back a hundred years or so. The hubris of humans to believe that they know everything that has transpired on this earth never ceases.
Don’t let Hillary and Bill get within 1,000 miles of the Bahamas after how they pillaged Haiti a few years ago, posing as a “charity”.
What a moronic post! I can guarantee you have not had a cat 5 sitting on top of you for almost two days. Im a pro-met and NOBODY shrugs that off. What a terrible person you are.
IIRC, it’s up to 20 now.
We’ve always treated The Bahamas like our Little Sister................
20 as of this morning on GMA.....................
My thanks to you both. I think that even at 20 dead, that number is not as bad as I was fearing, 100 + because of the eye sitting over the 2 islands for nearly 3 days. It appears that the evacuation plan for the island worked.
I dont give a rat’s ass about your post about me. Pro-met my ass LOL
