"I also happen to believe that the Hispanics should work harder at assimilation. Thats one of the things Ive been saying for a long time. You know, they ought not to be just codified in their communities but make sure that all their kids are learning to speak English, and that they feel comfortable in the communities. And thats going to take outreach on both sides, frankly."
Thus opined Tom Brokaw, NBCs veteran news reporter and former anchorman, on Meet the Press, January 27, 2019. Brokaws tone wasnt hostile when he said this; he spoke as if he were giving friendly advice. His intentions were constructive. But an outcry broke out immediately, with various attacks on the veteran newsman.
Unsurprisingly, Brokaw dutifully buckled under that same evening, profusely apologizing in the manner weve become accustomed to seeing of public figures who wound up on the wrong side of the PC Divide.
Why did Brokaws reasonable-sounding comment provoke such hysteria? And what does that tell us about todays assimilation?
It used to be that assimilation was supported by almost everybody on the political spectrum.

Uhm, their kids do speak English and Spanish and their grandchildren will likely not speak Spanish.
They are no different than 1st generation immigrants and their children who come from any other country....
Heck, I have friends who are 1st born to immigrants and they don’t know how to speak much of their parents native tongue...
Tom is a Class-A Putz...
The term “Hispanic” will hold less meaning by the next generation. Nearly 60% of Hispanics in the US today self-identify as “white”.
It takes 3 generations. Vietnamese boat people come here at age 10 and end up valedictorians 8 years later. You really need to ask the question.
Compared to muslims...ABSOLUTELY. #existentialthreats
For the most part, no. The US makes it easy for them not to. Press 2 for Spanish, everything printed in English and Spanish.

It depends on which Hispanics you are talking about. Most Hispanics who have been here for generations do not speak Spanish.
Most still insist on speaking Spanish. And always will.
Soon it will be press 1 to continue in Spanish.
Many Hispanics, especially illegals, do not want to assimilate. They are here for jobs and free services, and send money back to Mexico. They don’t like this country, as they prefer to think that it is rightfully their country. At least all of the Southwest.
Unfortunately, there are enclaves forming where there are multi-generational families who still don’t speak English. This is a serious problem.
The term Hispanic has as much meaning as the term European.
Are Europeans assimilating..
Some are and some are not.

Of course, they are Americans.
I love the sob stories on the news of some DACA person who's going to be deported who needs a translator to sob how they've been here almost their whole life and it's the only home they've known.
Most immigrants, particularly Hispanics, actually want to assimilate. One of the big problems is the US educational system (or actually, the teachers’ union), which has a two-track system where they no longer teach English to newcomers but teach a bastardized program of “bilingual education,” which essentially means that kids are “taught” in their native languages by barely literate hotel cleaning staff who got hired as teachers’ aides because they had a lousy knowledge of whatever language (Spanish, Vietnamese, or whatever).
When a district in CA that a family member works for dumped “bilingual ed,” state test scores for Hispanic kids soared.
So we have to make more of an effort to teach kids our language, history and culture. You can’t blame them for not knowing it if we don’t teach them.
There are zero Hispanics residents where I live but tons working for the gas industry which is booming in my area who are living out of hotel rooms or rv trailers. Most are from Ok, Texas and LA.
Very friendly overall, most speak English and have fairly light skin. I would presume most are legal or green cards.
My Catholic church has been having a special mass for them couple times per month in Spanish and it is packed.
Better than muslims.
Answer is yes but Democrats and leftists in power try to stop it or control it. The latter is worse.
I’ve seen some Mex names in the High School sports section of the local paper in the past couple of years. Football, baseball and basketball.
You’re right.
