Most immigrants, particularly Hispanics, actually want to assimilate. One of the big problems is the US educational system (or actually, the teachers’ union), which has a two-track system where they no longer teach English to newcomers but teach a bastardized program of “bilingual education,” which essentially means that kids are “taught” in their native languages by barely literate hotel cleaning staff who got hired as teachers’ aides because they had a lousy knowledge of whatever language (Spanish, Vietnamese, or whatever).
When a district in CA that a family member works for dumped “bilingual ed,” state test scores for Hispanic kids soared.
So we have to make more of an effort to teach kids our language, history and culture. You can’t blame them for not knowing it if we don’t teach them.
