Actually, that is not the way it goes. I’ve seen plenty of Arab families walking together, the mother perhaps in a chadour or burkha, but the daughter in tight jeans and blouse with exposed head and face. More common in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, but except in very remote areas where no Jew goes, it’s unlikely that any girl would get killed over modern-ish dress.
Malach, I respectfully disagree. first, while it’s true that the Arabs who left Israel haven’t been treated kindly by other Arabs, that’s no different than many other Arab groups who haven’t been treated kindly by other Arab groups. They’re not exactly a kindly group, Arabs: they’re brutal to each other, when they don’t (and often even when they do) have outsiders whom they can all hate together.
Second, they’ve had autonomy for a long time (and would have it and more if they didn’t insist on coming out of their towns to murder Jews), and they’ve had the official right to regulate civilian affairs in their towns since 1992. The reason this sort of insanity happens is not because their local governments are corrupt. They certainly are corrupt, but the corruption isn’t causing this. What’s causing this is fidelity to 7th century principles of honor and shame, which are nourished by a particular interpretation of Islam and its requirements. Yes, there are other possible interpretations of Islam; just don’t try advocating for them in Jericho or Ramallah. And even if you do it in London, or Brussels, or New York, if you plan on actually being heard, better hire some bodyguards.
And if a girl were killed for that reason, Israel has police, and it laws against murder, and a government, and courts, and prosecutors, and defense lawyers. And they work as well as they work in any other country whose guiding principles are those of Western civilization.
None of that happens in territory controlled by the Palestinian Authority.
Nor in the more backward regions of the Islamic world. But her chances of survival would be better even in the “occupied” territories than in the hinterlands of the Sudan or Yemen.
It happened in Jerusalem. I had an honor killing happen just a few blocks from where I lived in Phoenix though. It was a few years ago. The evil father got arrested in London on his way back to Iraq.
