No, 50 miles out can do a lot of damage. We don’t usually get devastating winds in North Florida, but the flooding (from storms that didn’t hit directly) made me have to move out of my house twice and have the lower floor rebuilt. Floods from the storm surge are the biggest problem.
Don’t laugh about this, there will be damage.
If your a Floridian you prepare, if it’s tougher looking than what you got ready for, get the hell out. I don’t want to hear a bunch of whining crap. You live there for yor own reasons. Deal with it. I live in tornado country, we get floods, we get bad winters. Can’t take it move to Iran.

Of course you are right and I pray for your safety. I certainly didn’t mean to give the impression that I was making light of this. It’s just the coverage is over hyped but by golly they are working very hard to cover their ‘overhyping’. Heck as of Friday, this hurricane was going to wipe FL off the map
Smith lost me on Katrina. When he was reporting the roving gangs shooting people and the bodies stacking up in the Superdome I said enough. Have not watched him since.

Right now, there are sustained winds of 145 mph with higher gusts still over the Bahamas and the storm is stopped. There are constant winds of 145 mph actually changing the geography of the Bahamas and people's lives and you are calling it over the top.
The storm will pass within about 50 miles of Florida's coast where millions live where the forecast for the central coastal counties is as follows: sustained winds of 55 to 65 mph with gusts to 80 mph for 18 to 24 hours. This is not a thunderstorm with a burst of high winds. This is that same thunderstorm lasting almost a whole day.
In addition, there is a storm surge of 4 to 7 feet with 10 feet waves on top of that. That is like a wave of almost two stories pushed on shore by the hurricane which will cause a lot of damage and flooding and this on shore flow will continue for hours.
And this is not even a direct hit. They are expecting a lot of roof damage, some homes having structural damage, tons of downed trees, impassable streets, lost electricity for a week or more, severe beach erosion with dunes completely lost and a changed Florida coast line.
And you think coverage is over the top. What massive ignorance and coldness and no I don't live in Florida.
This storm will affect millions. That is why it is over the top. The storm will strafe the coast causing billions in damage, which you will pay for.

I’ve never thought about it until now, but what powers the electric grid in the Bahamas? Coal or natural gas power plants? Really long waterproof drop cords to Florida?
Has Kim Campbell been put on suicide watch? Can she cope with the possibility that Mar-a-Lago might survive unscathed?
I lived through Hurricane Gracie back in 1959 and then we were transferred PCS to Japan where the next month experienced the meanest Super typhoon(Vera) ever to hit Japan that destroyed our house while we were in it. I have much sympathy and empathy for those that are going through this debacle right now and hope I don’t ever have to go through it ever again.
That sounds awful. Glad you survived that typhoon.
