Fake news and social media posts are such a threat to U.S. security that the Defense Department is launching a project to repel “large-scale, automated disinformation attacks,” as the top Republican in Congress blocks efforts to protect the integrity of elections.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency wants custom software that can unearth fakes hidden among more than 500,000 stories, photos, video and audio clips. If successful, the system after four years of trials may expand to detect malicious intent and prevent viral fake news from polarizing society.
“A decade ago, today’s state-of-the-art would have registered as sci-fi — that’s how fast the improvements have come,” said Andrew Grotto at the Center for International Security at Stanford University. “There is no reason to think the pace of innovation will slow any time soon.”
U.S. officials have been working on plans to prevent outside hackers from flooding social channels with false information ahead of the 2020 election. The drive has been hindered by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s refusal to consider election-security legislation. Critics have labeled him #MoscowMitch, saying he left the U.S. vulnerable to meddling by Russia, prompting his retort of “modern-day McCarthyism.”

During the election, I saw an analysis of bot activity on forums, news comment sections, etc. About 60% of the bot activity was pro-Hillary.
The headline of this article was misleading. The majority of fake news comes from the news media, not posts on social media. Furthermore, fake news always pushes the leftist narrative—like the notion that fake news somehow helped get Trump elected, when the media has coordinated fake news attacks on him from the get-go.

Because it’s gonna be done by someone, and I’m not sure letting the media/social media say whatever it wants and act like the arbiter or truth is working out all that well.

It is not an if this or that situation.
Today Social Media is the modern day telephone. Can you imagine if AT&T or whoever is your phone company turned your phone off because the were listening to your private phone calls and they did not like what you were saying? That would be horrible and the phone companies cannot legally do that. This is because the phone companies are regulated.
AT&T was broken up in 1984 and Facebook alone is A LOT bigger than them.
Right now legally speaking Social Media companies say they are a “platform”, and therefore are not legally liable for what is posted on their web site. They lobbied and got these legal protections to be listed as a platform vs a publisher.
However, at the very same time Social Media companies are behaving like publishers that can legally edit and censor. So they are censoring conservatives, patriots, Trump supporters and people they do not like.
That is fine, but then they lose their legal protection as a public platform and say you are now publisher that is legally liable for everything on their websites since they want to censor people they do not like. It would open them up to a host of legal lawsuits and ultimately lead to the shutdown of the Social Media sites.
Right now social Media companies are trying to have it both ways. They want to censor, but not be held criminally or legally liable for what is posted on their platforms.
Another option besides removing the legal platform status President Trump could do is to have an Internet Bill of Rights. You can model it after the Bill of Rights.
Personally I think President Trump should tell Social Media if you do not stop censoring people you do not like, then you will be changed to a Publisher and we are getting the lawsuits together now. However, if you want to remain a platform, then end all your censorship now. Do not wait another day.
On top of that I wish President Trump should create an Internet Bill of Rights. That is what we need from companies and governments abusing people because they do not like what they are saying, doing, etc...
