Men now avoid women at work – another sign we're being punished for #MeToo
The Guardian (UK) ^ | 8/29/2019 | Arwa Mahdawi

It looks like Mike Pence is quite the trendsetter. The US vice-president famously refuses to have dinner alone with any woman who isn’t his wife – and now working men across corporate America appear to be following his lead.

A new study, due to be published in the journal Organizational Dynamics, has found that, following the #MeToo movement, men are significantly more reluctant to interact with their female colleagues. A few highlights from the research include:

• 27% of men avoid one-on-one meetings with female co-workers. Yep, that’s right, almost a third of men are terrified to be alone in a room with a woman.

• 21% of men said they would be reluctant to hire women for a job that would require close interaction (such as business travel).

• 19% of men would be reluctant to hire an attractive woman.

The data above was collected in early 2019 from workers across a wide range of industries. Researchers had asked the same questions (albeit to different people and with more of a focus on future expectations) in early 2018, just as #MeToo was in full swing, and depressingly, things appear to have got worse. In 2018, for example, 15% of men said they would be more reluctant to hire women for jobs that require close interpersonal interactions with women, compared to 21% in 2019.

It’s not just men who are afraid of women, by the way. Women also appear to be increasingly wary of hiring women. The 2018 survey results found that more than 10% of men and women said they expected to be less willing than before to hire attractive women. (Note: the 2019 results for women are not yet public.) ...

Scary to think of what might have happened after any one of those many closed door sessions I had with staff, interns, students, and patients over the years - good to be retired......

Oh, well. If women don’t like it they better get started fixing it. It’s a mess they created and men cannot fix it, so either the women step up and do it or it won’t happen.

But it felt darned odd"

I say you need to loosen up.

Can someone answer this?

I live in a rural area. My local male doctor retired and a woman doc bought out his practice.

I have a physical scheduled for October. Will she be required to have a witness in the room? It’s been a while so I know she will do the cough test and the finger exam.

All the employees are female. Not looking forward to it.

The little old ladies are still sweet, aren’t they? I won a poinsettia at a company Christmas party one year and gave it to the cleaning lady. She was thrilled and it wasn’t something we could use since we have a cat.

The entire information exchange was outside in the parking lot where the smokers took their cigarette breaks together. I was never there.

What a great point! I had to laugh at that...I was the on-site boss of a $1.6B project and I was always the last to know what was going on because I too am not a smoker.

And, it used to really piss me off that smokers managed to get 10 to 15-minutes off every hour for a smoke.
I noticed that none of them ever volunteered to arrive at the office early or stay late to make up for goof-off smoke breaks during work hours.

I have lived my life like that, don’t see a problem and I just refuse to put myself in a position where temptation has a chance of winning, because that means you LOSE!!!, most likely everything you have.

Before I retired I tried to make friends with one of our new female engineers and to let he know that some work she had done was good. After the first encounter I resolved to have as little to do with her as humanly possible. Talk about a screw lose and s seething cauldron of hate and resentment. Stay away, a bomb with a short fuse on a hair trigger.

I have always stayed away from workplace romance. The odds of anything good coming of it, long term, are very small. I also do not pal around with the women at work, I will work with them but nothing social unless it is a group thing. Platonic relationships are not realistics most of the time.

Unfortunately this does reduce the opportunity to find a nice date seeing as the bulk of my time is spent at work.

Women are like cats. Neither one of them usually have any sense of humor.

No, ladies, it’s just that we don’t dare come within ten feet of you or talk freely in your presence. We avoid you out of concern for our own work place safety. And yes, being safe in our work position, is important. Our livelihood depends on it.

Yup. When I was an intern at Paramount late 2000’s, ALL of my GF’s were employees.

the bad part? The break-up. It was total shadow war against me and the awkward moments after the break up sucks.

“Here in Kentucky, the water cooler talk is always sports, especially the local college teams.”

Several years ago, in a Houston office, four men were sitting in the break room,
having coffee and discussing, among themselves, their weekend deer hunts.

A female coworker entered the break room for coffee and overheard the conversation. She immediately went to HR and filed a complaint against all four men for creating a ‘hostile work environment’. No words were exchanged between these men and the female. All four men now have an entry in their personnel files.
