Georgia Republican Senator Johnny Isakson announced Wednesday that he will resign from his seat at the end of 2019 due to Parkinson's disease and other medical problems.
"I am leaving a job I love because my health challenges are taking their toll on me, my family and my staff, Sen. Isakson said in a statement. "My Parkinsons has been progressing, and I am continuing physical therapy to recover from a fall in July. In addition, this week I had surgery to remove a growth on my kidney."
"After much prayer and consultation with my family and my doctors, I have made the very tough decision to leave the U.S. Senate at the end of this year. I have informed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp today that I will resign my Senate seat effective December 31, 2019," he continued.
He confirmed that he will return to D.C. after recess ends in August. Isakson was elected in 2016. His next re-election would have been in 2022.
Godspeed.
Meanwhile, RBG pushes on.
As a Georgia resident I can tell you this is great news.
In Georgia, the governor appoints a new senator to serve out the full term, and then we have a regular.election, and we can re elect the incumbent. Really screws up Stacey Abrams.
Isakson needs to go.
That’s too bad.
Godspeed and prayers...
What do these people know? Is the gravy train coming to an end?
Prayers for him.
Now Georgia GOP find a GOOD candidate. If Roy Moore offers to move his residence to Georgia, politely decline.
His Parkinsons caught up with him
This is why winning governorships is so important!
Dont believe it will be Deal.
Sorry to hear about his Parkinson’s, but hope there is a young (30ish) Conservative Republican in Georgia to appoint for his seat...
Federal rules combined with Georgia State law:
Georgie Governor will name a replacement from a list of three names provided by the resigning Senators political party (Republican in this case). That replacement will serve until a special election is held in November 2020 for the rest of the term.
So among the 3 names on the GOP list MUST be placed a good conservative patriot and the Governor MUST select that name and NOT A RINO!
I guess it was known he had parkinsons
Tin foil hat on.
Are’nt a lot of Rs retiring from both chambers this year?
any chance being forced by deep state?
tin foil hat off
sounds crazy
but just wondering
Ditto. Ol’ Johnny has been hanging in there since 04(ish). What has he done? Swamper.
We need someone who can hold the seat for 2 terms starting in 2022. That means THREE election campaigns statewide. Youth, experience, and conservative fire in the belly is what’s needed. Who is it?
Geez... democrats hang on to their seats until their brain tumors pop their eyeballs out.
It’s the right call. He needs to be at home to heal. Prayers up for the Senator from Georgia!
DC is an unhealthy town. It is not for those who want to live a long, healthy, happy life.
John Lovell? Not in politics, but hes a vet, has the right views, and is good on camera.
