Roy Cohn claimed that Ethel was the real brains behind the Rosenberg spy ring, not merely Julius’ “secretary.” She was apparently much smarter than Julius and, as you said, played a key role in recruiting participants in the network.

When Senator McCarthy needed a legal assistant, two up-and-comers stepped forward for the opportunity. The competition resulted in a physical fight where one of them got a black eye. (I can’t remember which one.) Roy Cohn was the winner. The other candidate, who lost: Bobby Kennedy!
