The long-running legal battle between the Los Angeles Times and former sports columnist T.J. Simers closed its latest chapter Monday when a jury in Los Angeles awarded him $15.4 million in damages over the age- and disability-discrimination lawsuit he filed in 2013.
That year, Simers suffered what was then diagnosed as a mini-stroke while covering spring training in Arizona; eventually it was determined he has complex migraine syndrome.
After his medical incident, Simers claimed the Times cut his thrice-weekly column down to two, citing several that were poorly written or reflected poorly on the newspaper, and began giving his columns scrutiny that had never been given before. He then was suspended with pay in June 2013 over a video featuring Simers, his daughter and former Lakers player Dwight Howard that briefly was posted to the newspapers website. The Times said Simers failed to disclose his business relationship with the producer of the video, which allegedly was a promotion for a proposed television show based on Simerss life. The columnist countered that the project was dead by the time the video was posted and that he had no business relationship with the producers company.

Based on what is in the article, I kinda side with the times.
Me too.
And even if not 15 million!?!!?
I was thinking the same thing.
ML/NJ
Fifteen million? Wow!
Complex migraine syndrome...... I had what was thought to be a stroke. One side started going numb and then I was unconscious for about 10 minutes. Extensive testing and no stroke damage found. Scary, but it hasnt happened since. Havent read in the news of anyone having this. Nice to know Im not alone.
so basically, according to the lawsuit- employers are no longer allowed to fire anyone for any reason despite poor performance- the hiree must decide when they no longer wanna work anymore, and even if they decide they don’t want to meet the standards of the business, the business has no right firing them-
Was gonna say, you still have to be able to actually do your job. It’s a shame he had a stroke, but if that affected his ability to write coherently that’s a legitimate issue to his employer.
Never thought I’d defend the MSM on anything.
[[They did the only rational thing they could do and moved the plant to Mexico. ]]
And that is a major reason why companies move overseas- because we’ve lost our collective minds here in the US
A jury in Los Angeles awarded him $15.4 million.
Any questions
Dont start now.
Companies have long had the knack of age discrimination in order to limit salary and health costs and keep a more compliant leftist workforce.
A quick search turns up tons of history punishing men, anyone over 30, and those discovered to have an opinion rightward of Mao.
The victim just gets poor ratings and compensation and crap assignments until they get the hint and leave; rarely does it come to anything so actionable as firing.
You dont imagine the 98%+ lefty bias in the MSM happened by meritocracy, or the similar fervor in Silicon Valley tech?
I always thoroughly enjoyed Simers’ hilarious columns, both before and after his stroke.
Thanks for your reality post.

We have a friend who might be in this category. As of now she has been diagnosed as having a minor TIA.
This link does an excellent job of explaining this syndrome.

Does your problem repeat itself when you are really tired or after a poor night’s sleep?
The LA TIMES is the ultimate leftwing slime, on a level with the NY SLIMES and the Washington Compost.
No one here comprehends that.
I get that. I mean, hitler was a monster, but you couldn’t nail him on animal cruelty. He liked his dog.
When it comes to stories like this I try to leave my bias outside and just look at the facts. I put myself in the paper’s shoes and I would have done the same thing. It makes sense to do what they did.
I have never experienced that type of episode again. I do have visual migraines but, since I retired, I dont have as many as before.
