College Board Replacing SAT ‘Adversity Score’ (Revised again)
AP ^ | August 27, 2019 | CAROLYN THOMPSON

The company that administers the SAT college admissions test is replacing the so-called adversity score with a tool that will no longer reduce an applicant’s background to a single number, an idea that the College Board’s chief executive now says was a mistake.

Amid growing scrutiny of the role wealth plays in college admissions, the College Board introduced its Environmental Context Dashboard about two years ago to provide context for a student’s performance on the test and help schools identify those who have done more with less. The version used by about 50 institutions in a pilot program involved a formula that combined school and neighborhood factors like advanced course offerings and the crime rate to produce a single number.

But critics called it an overreach for the College Board to score adversity the way it does academics.

David Coleman, College Board’s chief executive, said in an interview with The Associated Press that some also wrongly worried the tool would alter the SAT results.

“The idea of a single score was wrong,” he said. “It was confusing and created the misperception that the indicators are specific to an individual student.”

“The idea of a single score was wrong”

They're not doing away with the score. They're breaking it down so schools can determine each disadvantage factors to consider.

This right here pisses me off to no end. My boys work sooooo darned hard in school, their test scores are through the roof and they do all of this while balancing football and wrestling time. For some clown to tell me my boys are LESS deserving because daddy makes a lot of money and they go to a good school is complete and utter BS!

Disadvantage scores my a$$!!! I grew up on the lower east side of Pueblo, Colorado (if you wanted to give Colorado an enema... this is where you’d stick the hose), in HUD housing, on welfare and raised by an alcoholic mother. I got my ass kicked by the Mexican kids DAILY. Disadvantaged? You bet! But I’ll be darned if I stayed that way and I didn’t have ANYONE to help me out or GIVE me a darned DISADVANTAGED SCORE! My education and everything we enjoy in life came from hard darned work and blessing from above.

My suggestion to end all this confusion: Assign everyone who takes the SAT the same score. 1140 would work well. It’s a good score, but not so good as to give anyone a swelled head.

Just thinking outside the box here.

My parents grew up in the depression and worked numerous part time jobs to go to college. I am to be penalized because my parents have a college degree. I guess hard work and saving is to be punished. Insanity.

The real problem is what passes for “higher education” these days in the first place. We are living in the most illiterate and uncultured age - yet so many people are stamped as “educated.”

"They're not doing away with the score. They're breaking it down so schools can determine each disadvantage factors to consider. "

That's exactly what they are doing.

Renamed “Landscape,” the revised tool will provide a series of data points from government sources and the College Board.

We used thoughtful feedback from educators, students, and parents to design Landscape, a resource that college admissions officers can use to learn more about an applicant’s high school and neighborhood. https://t.co/nFemsc9gpS pic.twitter.com/OM31IlYkzI— The College Board (@CollegeBoard) August 27, 2019

I wonder how many of these disadvantaged will get tens of thousands in debt then flunk/drop out, with no to pay loans back.

Math is math. English is English. You take a test, you get a score. If you bothered to pay attention during the first 11 years of your education, you will score well. If you didn’t, you won’t score well unless you are a good guesser.

Nothing hard about this. Color does not affect learning ability. Teachers who only care about their benefits do.

Adversity scores benefit no one at the end of the day. At what point do people realize that performance in the real world is all that matters?

In recent years, it used to be they gave preferential treatment to those that had skin color other than white.
Now, they plan to give additional preferential treatment based on how poor the neighborhood is, or how many in their high school receive federal tax dollars for lunch.

Totally illegal to discriminate like that, but they get away with it because we're told whites can't complain. Well, Asian Americans are starting to see and be negatively affected by the discrimination now.

It amazes me how many whites (& now Asians) can continue to vote in large percentages, for their own demise.

This stuff isn't about fairness...it's about completely remaking the country.

List your race as black when you take the test. Problem solved.

Thanks for posting this. Wonders whether the SAT is intentionally going weak-kneed.

It sounds like a scheme to get more under-qualified students to attend colleges for which they are not suited so they may incur student loan debt that they will not be able to repay.
Just more liberal feel good nonsense.
