AP Issues Correction: The Steve King-Abortion story

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — In a story Aug. 14 about Rep. Steve King’s comments on banning abortion, The Associated Press, relying on a story by The Des Moines Register, inaccurately quoted King as saying, “It’s not the baby’s fault for the sin of the father, or of the mother.” Referring to House support for a ban on abortions, King actually said, “I’ve got 174 people who say they don’t want exceptions for rape and incest because they understand it is not the baby’s fault, to abort the baby, because of the sin of the father, and maybe sometimes the sin of the mother too.”

A corrected version of the story is below:

Rep. Steve King says rapes, incest helped populate the world

US Rep Steve King is defending his call for a ban on all abortions by questioning whether there would be “any population of the world left’ if not for births due to rape and incest

Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. Rep. Steve King on Wednesday defended his call for a ban on all abortions by questioning whether there would be “any population of the world left” if not for births due to rape and incest.

Speaking before a conservative group in the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale, the Iowa congressman reviewed legislation he has sought that would outlaw abortions without exceptions for rape and incest. King justified the lack of exceptions by questioning how many people would be alive if not for those conceived through rapes and incest.

STEVE KING QUOTE:

“What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape and incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?” King asked, according to video of the event, which was covered by The Des Moines Register. “Considering all the wars and all the rape and pillage that’s taken place ... I know I can’t certify that I’m not a part of a product of that.”

King said, “Human life cannot be measured—it is the measure itself, against which all things are weighed,” he said. “There’s not a qualifier there, whether you’re one day after conception, or one day after birth, or one day before your 100th birthday, all life has equal value according to the law and all equal value according to God,”

Telling the truth in a time of universal deceit is a revolutionary act.

I’m no fan of Steve King, since he says stuff that the country isn’t ready for. But he STICKS AROUND, rather than retiring and thus holds the seat for us. That’s BETTER than some 55 or so Republicans who have bolted, most who were assured re-election, since Trump took office, and now half (at least) have been replaced by Democrats.

Give me a reliable Republican on the House floor that doesn’t (or isn’t) allowed to add pork for his district (like King now) and I’ll give him my vote, ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

King’s district is solidly red and there’s rumors of a primary challenge. We may yet get a Republican who doesn’t stick his foot in his mouth so often.

I’m ok with that also. We don’t need to provide even more fodder for the Left, as they already make up enough without our help.

You do not understand that the left has drawn a great big target on King’s back. They’re doing to King the same thing they’re doing to Trump, They take a sliver of what he says and distort and exaggerate and give half truths. Now some political opportunists have seen the opportunity to primary him and they’re piling on using the left’s exact same language.

I have no problem with anyone primaryjng him because that is the process but I have a huge problem with the way his closest competitor is doing it. He’s using the left’s exact same language to defeat King and King deserves more respect than that.

Steve King’s worst enemy is Steve King.
Yes the media isn’t fair with him, but he says plenty of boneheaded things on his own.
