Joe Arpaio announces run for seventh term as Maricopa County sheriff

Joe Arpaio announced Sunday that he will seek a seventh term as the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, promising to reopen his infamous tent city jail and bring back controversial jail policies that drew the ire of civil rights advocates and made him a darling of tough-on-crime conservatives.

Arpaio, who called himself "America's toughest sheriff" during his 24-year run, said he'll challenge incumbent Paul Penzone in the 2020 sheriff's race. Penzone, a Democrat, unseated Arpaio in 2016 for the job.

“On this day, August 25, 2019, after consultation and approval from my wife of 61 years, Ava, I have decided to run to be re-elected Sheriff,” Arpaio said in a news release. “Watch out world! We are back!”

Lightweight Penzone is defeatable - but not by Joe. Many conservatives were happy to see him go.

The next Sheriff needs to focus hard on gun rights, illegal alien detention, and homeless abatement. He needs to be an effective counterweight to the Phoenix city government, not a fellow traveler like Penzone. A David Clarke type - younger and more energetic than Arpaio.

You’re right.

Well I didn’t know about the primary and i didn’t know about his refusing court orders.

87.

Play with the grandkids or even take up golf.

My uncle is 92 and plays.

Some people can’t let go.

Souter, Kennedy and O’Connor are all gracefully retired.

Do you really want to stake a case on RBG, who is still just 86 btw? Next oldest on the court is Thomas, who at 71 is a couple of years younger than Trump.

Sheriff Joe was soundly whooped by a Dem in 2016 — and now he says he is going to run again for a term in which Joe would be 88-92 years old.

Get the old fool off the stage!

I know, right? I mean, who in the heck would put up hundreds of thousands of dollars for a guy destined to come in third.

Joe has ran statewide for the GOP senator slot but lost in a three way primary
race. Sheriff will be in just one county thus he has a different situation.

Joe Arpaio 116,555 17.79% statewide

Arpaio is better than Creepy Joe. If they can run that brain dead A hole, then what’s the difference? And I’m not comparing Arpaio with Biden’s short comings.

I will vote for Sheriff Joe!! He’s the only sheriff in the country who enforced existing immigration law.

Except that he already lost his last county-wide election and now he is going to be four years older.

I think it’s an affront to President Trump. He went out of his way to grant him a pardon presumably for someone of his age to close out his career and life without a cloud hanging over him.

He’s 87 years old! Does he still have it?

It's not like he has to go out and chase the bad guys...all he has to do is give orders and supervise performance.

What we are talking about is the highest level of his “executive” brain function. That he no longer reliably has always available it appears to me.

Perhaps like my Dad at 90, he had a few that were a lot younger, but most that were of a similar age are already gone. He may have surrounded himself with yes-men as his work-buddies.
