Stanford pushes separate physics course for minority students

Stanford University is pushing a separate physics course for minorities in hopes that it will result in more diversity among physics majors.

A 2016 survey revealed Stanford’s physics department to be one of the “least diverse” departments within the institution, and the university has since embarked on a mission to resolve that supposed concern, according to a university news release.

“Creation of special curricula and support services for ethnic minority groups and women...textbook examples of unequal treatment” Tweet This One step Stanford has taken is promoting a modified version of the standard Mechanics course, a requirement for physics majors, boasting “added support.”

Stanford’s alternate version of this course, Physics 41E, boasts additional class time, as well as “learning assistants,” individuals with a “passion” for “education equity,” who are paid by the university to guide students through the difficult course.

The university says this modified course helps to increase diversity in the field because “students from underrepresented groups often don’t have the same level of preparation from high school as their majority peers.”

Surely you jest.

Just look at these ways that Berkeley, like ALL other colleges in the US at this point, offer various centers and support services whereby no student has to actually write their own papers or do their own homework:

https://www.berkeley.edu/academics/advising-tutoring

All they need to do is weight in-class exams to count as a small enough portion of the grade to, voila, be able to pass virtually anyone in any course.

beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder

just for fun,
here are some recent Stanford University rankings...

CNBC Definitive University Ratings... Number 1
Niche College Ratings... Number 2
World University Ratings... Number 2 in world
Money Magazine University Ratings.. Number 6 (but what do they know?)

Your Mileage May Differ, of course...
and Stanford is best known for certain of its professional schools (Medicine, Law, and Engineering especially)

You need the rest of the joke...

Teaching Math In 1860: A logger sells a wagonload of lumber for three one dollar gold coins. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is the gold in the coins worth in 1850 dollars, and what would his profit be in today’s gold coin valuation?

Teaching Math in 1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1970: A logger exchanges a set ‘’L’’ of lumber for a set ‘’M’’ of money. The cardinality of set ‘’M’’ is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set ‘’M’’. The set ‘’C’’, the cost of production contains 20 fewer points than set ‘’M.’’ Represent the set ‘’C’’ as a subset of set ‘’M’’ and answer the following question: What is the cardinality of the set ‘’P’’ for profits?

Teaching Math in 1980: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. Her cost of production is $80 & her profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math in 1990: By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the forest birds & squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees? There are no wrong answers.

Teaching Math in 2000: By laying off 40% of its loggers, a company improves its stock price from $80 to $100. How much capital gain per share does the CEO make by exercising his stock options at $80? Assume capital gains are no longer taxed, because this encourages investment.

Teaching Math in 2010: A company outsources all of its loggers. The firm saves on benefits, and when demand for its product is down, the logging work force can easily be cut back. The average logger employed by the company earned $50,000, had three weeks vacation, a nice retirement plan & medical insurance. The contracted logger charges $50 an hour. Was outsourcing a good move?

Teaching Math in 2019: A laid-off logger with four kids at home and a ridiculous alimony from his first failed marriage comes into the logging-company corporate offices, goes postal, and mows down 16 executives, a couple of secretaries, and gets lucky when he nails a politician on the premises collecting his kickback. Was outsourcing the loggers a good move for the company?

I’m sure some students could use some remedial math — but then those students should be able to fly because numbers don’t care who is crunching them.

In 1570 a Portuguese Captain buys a 100 slaves from a North African Muslim for a trunk of firearms. If the slaves fetch one silver coin each when sold to the offshore colonial boat, what does the colonial boat’s descendants owe in reparations?

If I’m a top student attending Stanford and I see remedial classes like this, I’m thinking I made the wrong pick.

Can you tell me which suburban hospital gave up on the surgery? I live on an outlying area (Abington).

Women's IQ’s (unlike men's which are a bell curve) tend to clustered around the mean... women have a smaller percentage of IQ’s over 140 - and a smaller percentage with IQ’s under 75... fewer idiots, fewer saints fewer criminals... fewer chess grand masters...fewer mathematicians. Mother Nature's a bitch or in Newspeak - a sexist.

from link:

The University of Alabama-Birmingham has received $1.25 million in federal funding to help “review” and “isolate” policies that supposedly perpetuate a lack of female representation in science and math.

This grant will “build on” a previous $3 million grant, which the university says was “successful” in breaking down “systemic” barriers preventing women from succeeding in STEM.

Not to worry, it was in Dover, Delaware.

The local hospital is fantastic, as long as what you've got fits the usual paradigm. If it isn't, you go North!

They’re probably teaching them how the black Egyptians lost the power of flight because the mad scientist Yakub created the white devils to torment them (which is part of the Nation of Islam’s canon).
