A fatal so-called 'zombie' disease swiftly spreading in the United States and Canada among deer, elk and moose might put humans at risk if they eat diseased venison.
Chronic wasting disease causes elk and deer to stop eating and behave in confused ways as their brains are turned into sponges by abnormal proteins.
The slowly incubating disease, which leaves microscopic holes in an animal's brain, is caused by prions.
They are the same rogue proteins that caused bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, in Britain in the 1980s.
About 200 people in the Britain and Europe died of prion-based Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease about 10 years after eating infected beef.
Today, about one in 2,000 people in Britain harbour inactive prions in their bodies, but have not yet shown symptoms, scientists say.
So far, there is no evidence that chronic wasting disease can cross species from deer to humans.
But abnormal prion diseases can take years to show up and prions are known to mutate into new forms, a new call-to-action opinion paper suggests.

And bodies have to be buried and not cremated.

You get liberals- liberals love to raise deer- hence the large amount of brain dead liberals

“So far, there is no evidence that chronic wasting disease can cross species from deer to humans.”
A doe wound up gone down in my lane years back and my dad and my husband had to go take care of her.
She most likely had this.
We saw a lot of scrawny, mangy deer for a couple years but most of them now look pretty good.
None of us ate venison for quite a while, after her.
This is terrifying because rack hunters give lots of deer to my friend.
She, her husband and her dogs live on that meat.
The US also ended the practice in the late 90’s under the FDA du to ckj concerns. Animal waste products or protein from livestock are no longer permitted to be used as feed. This also had the side impact of pretty much ending all cases of trichinosis in livestock.
I stopped hunting a few years ago when it showed up in my area. Just don’t think I want to take the chance.
Bernie is one of the first victims .
Walt Disney ruined our country by making animals talk not too long after the 19th amendment passed.
Good connection, that.
I read some years ago that because the UK doesn’t have the climate to grow soybeans, farmers fed their cows ground up meat products from sheep. The disease then spread due to the aformentioned brain and spinal cord tissue being in the feed.
It already has just look at the Democrat Party...
Avoid eating organ tissue.
You can cut your risk by boning out the animals, rather than using a bandsaw to cut your steaks. The CWD lives in the bone marrow, not in the meat.
No. CWD is not connected to marrow.
Deer hunters should also know where CWD has been confirmed to ensure they have an animal tested following a successful hunt, and so that they follow all carcass transport regulations with respect to moving high-risk parts of harvested animals. High-risk parts include the brain, eyes, spleen, spinal cord and lymph glands, and multiple states restrict high-risk parts from entering from states that have confirmed CWD. Additional states prohibit hunters from bringing these parts into their state from any other state regardless if that other state has confirmed CWD or not. Other than moving live animals, moving high-risk parts is the most likely way to move the disease and thats why most states restrict or prohibit all movement of these parts.
I’ve read that infected deer initially may not have visible symptoms of the disease. So a deer that looks healthy may be infected. Pennsylvania government websites recommend that hunters wear gloves when handling a deer carcass and that they don’t get anywhere near the deer’s brain and spinal cord. One official website suggests that it probably won’t be long before the prions infect humans because they will be in the food supply from contaminated deer meat.
Infected deer have been identified in counties near where I live. Hunting is a major sport in the area. I’ve heard hunters discussing the issue.
Now I finally know why the Moose ate my sister.
It was mentally ill
Zombie disease, aka cronic wasting disease. Pretty old news.
