I love him, but far as I know, the President can’t order companies around like that. No president can because we are not a dictatorship. Maybe I’m wrong and someone can point to the law that enables a president to do this.

Depends how much they want tariffs on the products they produce in China, I’d say.

The President doesn’t need a law to Demand, Order, Insist or any other word he wants to use. Also, companies are under no legal obligation to follow these orders.

If WMD like fentanyl are being smuggled into this country and killing 100K Americans a year, then stopping it becomes a matter of national security

People I know who have died of OD were fed this poison intentionally and unwittingly.

“the President can’t order companies around like that. ”

Not the point.

Trumpus Magnimus KNOWS that using this word electrifies and amplifies his words about China - and will make them dominate the news.

It also puts companies in the awkward position of either cavorting with known enemies or choosing our side.

And it puts pressure on China by telling the truth about what they are doing.

The left had the same problem during that primaries and the general election, they took him very literally, refusing to understand what he was saying.

Looks like you’re following the same path

A sovereign nation controls trade at its borders and these shipping companies move goods across OUR borders and into OUR country. The executive branch enforces the US laws on trade and ordering these shipping companies to look for contraband is entirely in the purview of POTUS. They can try to refuse to listen but they should’nt be surprised if they lose the privilege of shipping internationally.

I think “order” is artful language in this case (except for the inspection of shipments for fentanyl, that he can direct). By using “order” he puts everyone protesting that he can’t “order” them to do do anything to place themselves on the side of China...and defend doing their manufacturing in China when most people in America believe that is not in our best interests.

By using extreme language, he forces opponents, in this case the mega-huge multinationals (already unpopular or at least suspicious, to use an equally dramatic response...which puts them squarely on the side of China. Not a good place to be.

On purely domestic transactions you are probably right. But I suspect that with regard to imports from foreign nations, the President can do this. The Executive has great power over foreign relations and national defense in the Constitution.

the President can’t order companies around like that.

It was rhetorical. Jeez, he can order them but the question is will they will listen.

They likely will do it because of the effect of the tariffs on their selling of product.

He can spend hours everyday on twitter and say whatever he wants, and he can order them to, but none of them are obligated to do a thing about it.

It's unfortunate that those around him don't explain the powers and limitations on power that the President has, because they make Trump look foolish, but he can still hang out on twitter and say whatever he wants.

If you look at Trump's biggest gaffes, it feels like it always comes back to his legal advisors have failed in explaining the limits on his power.

There will be idiots that think Trump can order companies around like that, and those idiots would have lost their minds if Obama tried the same thing, but eventually they'll snap out of it and realize, as you said, that such power = dictatorship.

I can't even see Trump's Tweets on my computer but If you're an American company you just try and do business with IRAN and see how far that gets you.. Sheesh.

You are not wrong and he is out of line for this order. Most of what he said is correct but he was foolish in even thinking he can order companies to do what he has said. It looks pretty unhinged to me. I wish he had not done this.

I voted FOR him and not against the opponent the last election. This was the first time in my life I ever actually voted FOR someone in nearly 40 years of voting.

This one action alone is shifting my vote from FOR Trump to AGAINST the opposition.

Tweets are not Executive Orders. This is a masterful political strategy by POTUS.

He has no authority to order private companies do to anything.
It’s bluster with no force.
